CFL CLEANUP AND DISPOSAL OVERVIEW

The most important steps to reduce exposure to mercury vapor from a broken bulb are:

1. Before cleanup

a. Have people and pets leave the room.

b. Air out the room for 5-10 minutes by opening a window or door to the outdoor

environment.

c. Shut off the central forced air heating/air conditioning (H&AC) system, if you have one.

d. Collect materials needed to clean up broken bulb.

2. During cleanup

a. Be thorough in collecting broken glass and visible powder.

b. Place cleanup materials in a sealable container.

3. After cleanup

a. Promptly place all bulb debris and cleanup materials outdoors in a trash container or

protected area until materials can be disposed of properly. Avoid leaving any bulb

fragments or cleanup materials indoors.

b. For several hours, continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken and leave the

H&AC system shut off.

I doubt anyone would describe me that way now answer the question.... do you run the AC in your house or car or do you limit your energy concerns at light bulbs?

I suspect you are like most of the busybodies..... you want to control peoples lives, to make judgments about how they spend their money or how much power they use when you yourself can't even adjust to comfort levels which were the norm just a few decades ago.

When you get rid of your AC and clothes dryer, then come talk to me until then you are just playing token-environmentalist.

:P

I suspect you are and only because statistically, the chances are that you are overweight and here's why I asked. If your doctor told that you need to lose some weight to lower your risk for diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, how would you go about losing that weight?

Hopefully, you'd answer that by saying through diet and exercise. Now, you still have to eat, right? So, do you stop eating or do you try eating healthier? And by eating healthier, would you stop eating meat and become a vegetarian if it meant you living a longer, healthier life?

If you are to accept that Global Warming is real and is being accelerated from CO2 emissions (doctor's warning/advice), you would want to look at how to reduce those CO2 emissions. The difference here is were not talking about just your quality of life, but the quality of life for your children's children and their children. Now does that mean you should abandon your convention home and live in a grass hut? No. There are reasonable measures that can be taken individually to help reduce your use of fossil fuels.

So now, you want to know what I'm doing? I have no AC in the apartment I live in (I live in high altitude). We have central heating and keep it set at 68 degrees, turning it down to 64 at night. I live close enough to walk to work, which I do but I also use the car. My wife also walks to work most of the time. Our son walks home from school. Almost all our lights in the house are either fluorescent or LED's, we don't flush the toilet at night when it's just urine to save water and before we moved to this place, we had front loading washer, which is incredibly efficient. We own only one car, a 4 cylinder which gets about 30mpg.

Could we do more? Certainly. But really, that's not the point. So back to topic - which is the fact that these RWN's in Washington are trying to undo even regulations that the Bush Administration set in place. See, they don't see any point in reducing CO2 emissions, don't see any issues with coal plants, and don't even believe that Global Warming is real.

So put that in your crack pipe and smoke it, Danno. If you want to argue the topic at hand, feel free to make a legitimate counter argument.

I have three problems with CFL bulbs:

- they don't work well with dimmers (although apparently now there are "dimmable" models)

- quality of CFL light - it's not as soft or warm as an incandescent

- they pose a health risk (and a disposal hazard) if broken

Sorry to disappoint, but I don't have a weight problem ... yet :star:

The same logic which removes certain light bulbs from the shelf can also decide that perhaps peoples ovens are too big... or maybe the size or type of hot water heater needs reduced or changed.... or mandating AC unites which will only work when the temp outside is about say 85.... these would save serious energy and they are no doubt the "next step."

I mean surely there is a next step right??? You can't really believe we can head off global catastrophe by changing to curly light bulbs?

I hate to break it to you, Danno, but a lot of people are overweight who don't think they are. But of course you could show us a recent pic to prove otherwise.

Nope. Home builders are already designing homes that are much more energy efficient and most of it is driven by demand - consumers would rather not have to pay a lot every month for utilities. Tax rebates are another incentive. There are many market forces that drive the economy and public policy is a key component - something that the RWN's fail to acknowledge or understand unless talking about companies like Halliburton and Black Water.

I have posted my photo before, maybe you were asleep.

I am 100% in favor of the market driving these wise innovations to save money (energy) I just know it is not enough for you folks... you need to force of the LAW to implement the changes you seek.

1. Dimmable models don't work well either but that is a non issue, dimmers are for dolts.

2. Has improved greatly, check them out

3. BS we used to play with mercury from broken thermometers in science class, Now they would evacutae the school. This is because we are pansie-@ss uberpussies now, NOT because of any real danger.

Procedures for broken CFLs...Sweep it up, throw it out, wash your hands.

The conservatives that are usually NOT uberpussies, suddenly become uberpussies when it is to their advantage to point out some "danger" of the new bulbs. The only thing worse than an uberpussy is a phoney uberpussy

I do not believe that.

I do not give a rat's @ss what restrictions you impose on your family. Leave me out of it.

I do not care what Danno's weight is. If he is married to a Russian he will eventually be fat...and very happy. SO WHAT? You will live until to you die just like the rest of us.

Incandescent bulbs are obsolete. If you use them you are wasting money. But it IS your money.

I have my pickup truck with an 8 cylinder engine idling on the driveway right now, It gets 16 miles per gallon when it is moving. -0- miles per gallon when I am warming it up because it is freakin' cold outside (so much for the warming theory) and I want it to be toasty warm when I get in. I use a remote starter to get it going...FTW! My thermostat is set at 72 degrees and I have electric heating coils in the ceramic tile in the bathroom so my feet are warm when I step out of the shower. If you are saving energy, great, I think it is like people that do not like deviled eggs...MORE FOR ME!

If you do not like it...too bad for you.

I hate to break it to you about overweight people. I do not care. we can go to Ukraine and marry slender Ukrainian women.

I like energy efficiency because it allows me to keep my house very warm for less of my money. I have no porblem with imporivements in efficiency...love it. I will keep the T-stat turned up though.

I will save fossil fuesl when it warms up outside...about late April. Until then I am burning dinosaurs to stay warm

If our president has a brain he will approve the Keystone pipeline so that more of the fossil fuel I use comes from Canada instead of Islamic dictators.

Mercury released into the air we all must breathe from the burning of coal has a very definite effect on health!

Yes but quantify that as a difference between the bulb types. 60% less energy maybe? Then factor in the amount of lighting that uses a standard bulb - maybe another 60% excluding things like MR16s etc. Lighting is about 8% of total electrical output. Therefore the local powerstation could see 2.88% decrease in power usage. Now determine the health effects on the local population. Its going to be negligible in comparison to phasing out lead fuel.

Hi Mark :star:

I don't know anything about the dimmable bulbs (no dimmers in my place), but the quality of the CFL light has improved A LOT. I remember when I first got them, I'd flip the switch and the thing would blink for 2 minutes before turning on. Now it's much smoother, and much softer light. There's still room for improvement, sure, but it's a start.

As far as disposal goes, luckily my kids haven't broken a bulb (YET) so I haven't had to sweep up broken bulb parts... but what I do with the old bulbs is bring them to Home Depot and they recycle them. I put them in a plastic ziploc bag and hold them until I have to make a trip there. I do the same thing with my batteries. I've heard that they take broken bulb parts as well, I'd just sweep them up (wearing gloves) and put them in a ziploc baggie.
