phased out - so much for choice!

You want them to bring back leaded gas, don't you, Charles? You miss the good 'ol days when the lead in the air made you feel more stupid.

Arguably the first and the most important global environmental health improvement to date has been the phase out of lead in gasoline. The phase out not only represents a nearly worldwide shift in paradigm regarding a toxic substance, but is also an example of a public-private partnership that has immeasurably impacted future generations. Simultaneously, two critical factors led to the phase out - the manufacture of catalytic converters directly into cars and the emerging medical data of the time that revealed the disastrous effect of lead on childhood health and development.

My whole house has those curly energy efficient bulbs because my electric company gave us rebate coupons to replace all our bulbs with energy efficient ones.

Huff-puff....WHAT? Giving you rebates? That never happens. Must be run by libruls.

Come on, Charles. Follow your own argument. I said they were being phased out and you made a generic comment that phasing out something isn't a choice, so I gave you an example of something else that was phased out. Steven = 1, Charles = 0

You whined about the idea of something being phased out as not giving you the consumer a real choice. Go back and read your post. You didn't even mention light bulbs. And best part is you responded to my comment about leaded gasoline. It's like arguing with a toddler.

2. your post referenced both light bulbs and leaded gasoline.

3. assume much when all i've been talking about is light bulbs?

I'm all for energy efficiency, but banning a certain type of light bulb? A bit much.

Terminology. They were to be phased out, just like leaded gasoline. I suppose some RWN's would like to bring back leaded gasoline.

You are either purposely trolling this thread or you've been sniffing leaded gasoline.

Did I say it doesn't? Nuclear power, for example, wouldn't exist in this country without policies as well as subsidies from the government. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find any private business that hasn't been shaped by policy in some form or another. For good or bad, that's how it works. The problem with you Randian fanbois is that in your fantasy world, any relationship between the public and private sector is bad, except for Blackwater and Halliburton.

Size Steven. SIZE of government is the issue.

I think libruls are compensating for "Size" by making government bigger.

Phasing out incandescent bulbs over 7 years doesn't increase the size of government. More fear mongering.

OK the thread is about lightbulbs, but someone opened the floor for a discussion of the Era of Darkness...

What ushered in the Era of Darkness was the

CRUSHING DEBT incurred by George W Bush's unbelievably misguided war in Iraq, that we are all (along with our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren) going to have to deal with.

Many thanks to the Visajourney community for all the help!

Wait a minute. The phase-out of leaded gasoline started in the early 1970's and was complete in 1996. Per capita federal expenditures - often used as an indicator of the size of government - in the early 1970's were about $4,000.00. By 1996, that number had risen to over $6,000.00. You see? The phaseout of leaded gasoline increased the size of government. What makes you so sure that the phaseout of the cherished incandescent bulbs won't do the same? In fact, government has already become bigger since the war on incandescent lightbulbs started back in 2007.
