Light Bulb Manufacturers Unhappy With Republican Intervention

U.S. light bulb manufacturers are displeased that Republican lawmakers have delayed efforts to introduce more efficient bulbs, a move that was supposed to have taken effect January 1. According to the Web site Politico, manufacturers like General Electric, Philips, and Osram Sylvania have been planning for four years to meet the new efficiency standards, which would have banned 100-watt bulbs and required other incandescent bulbs to be 30 percent more energy-efficient.

But in negotiating a year-end spending bill last week, Republicans in the House of Representatives and Senate included language that blocks the Energy Department from enforcing those rules at least until Sept. 30, 2012.

Many Republicans argue that dictating what kinds of light bulbs Americans can buy is an infringement on their personal freedoms. But the National Electric Manufacturers Association has been urging lawmakers not to delay enforcement of the new efficiency standards, arguing that light bulb makers have been planning to introduce new, more efficient bulbs since the passage of an energy law in 2007 under President George W. Bush. Under the law, incandescent bulbs were to be gradually phased out by 2015.

Light Bulb Manufacturers Unhappy With Republican Intervention

The intervention was principled in the demands of the American people, their constituents .... not what Business wanted: Unless you believe "Business are people too"?

Let the Manufactures put out what ever product they want and in the end the consumer will decide what he buys.

Think about it, how long have people charged the left with ushering an era of darkness on this country...... and here they literally live up to the charge by banning 100W light bulbs.

And even what Steve references as a measure "to take effect from Jan 1 for more-efficient bulbs", guess where the bulbs would be manufactured--NOT in the US, but in prison-labour Red China!

What kind of manufacturing is protected in the U.S. today? That's a separate issue and one that no GOP presidential candidate is even talking about.

I'm all for energy efficiency, but banning a certain type of light bulb? A bit much.

Terminology. They were to be phased out, just like leaded gasoline. I suppose some RWN's would like to bring back leaded gasoline.

"U.S. light bulb manufacturers are displeased" It is a free country. A gun is not held to their head making them produce anything. Kind of a stupid article. If you desire not to produce them then quit,Let the market decide what it wants to buy.(perhaps no one will buy them unless mandated by the government )This is what they are afraid of.

You are incredibly naive. Policies have a tremendous impact on private enterprise. Libertarian, Ayn Randian fanbois live in a fantasy world where nothing about their ideology exists in the real world.

Did I say it doesn't? Nuclear power, for example, wouldn't exist in this country without policies as well as subsidies from the government. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find any private business that hasn't been shaped by policy in some form or another. For good or bad, that's how it works. The problem with you Randian fanbois is that in your fantasy world, any relationship between the public and private sector is bad, except for Blackwater and Halliburton.

:ot:

They phased out my mom's iPod, I had to buy her a new one for Christmas. She was so pissed when she brought it into the Apple store to have it fixed (it wouldn't charge, something was wrong with the charging port) and they laughed in her face and basically told her it was obsolete and there's no parts for it anymore. She called them a bunch of "whiney brats."

My husband has an iPod touch and my mom calls it a "little iPad." Little does she know that's what she's getting for Christmas.

I like energy efficiency. My whole house has those curly energy efficient bulbs because my electric company gave us rebate coupons to replace all our bulbs with energy efficient ones.
