From the consensus of this board is seems like everyone has been agreeing that Canada is such a fantastic place and if they could be a citizen there they'd do it right now.

Why did you guys pick such an inferior place like the US and not a much superior country like Canada?

They are really mean losers. I read your story and the last thing on my mind was "BYE! SEE YA wouldn't want to be ya. Go back to Canada now you POS" which is basically what 90% of them said.

India, gun buyback and steamroll.

My now-wife is American, has a large extended family she's really close to, and hated Winnipeg (where I lived) when she visited. Can't say I blame her. Salt Lake City is a total upgrade from Winnipeg, but then, almost anywhere in North America would be. :) If I'd been from Vancouver or Quebec City I might have had a shot at talking her into moving to Canada, but Winnipeg is a very tough sell to anyone not born there. :D

DON'T PANIC

It's the short version of it that Canada's fantastic.

If you were having the same discussion with your friends I'm sure most of them would disagree with people on this forum and say that US is superior to Canada. You have feelings, and a lifetime invested in being here.

For some it takes years of pain of being apart because we're all doing it the legal way, trying to prove one won't become a public charge and spending endless amounts on fees, time, paperwork. Only because this forum is based on doing it the legal way, and advising on how to. That is why the replies might sound coldhearted to you.

"Choosing" US is - for me - a practical solution. I would've adores if husband, stepson and I were from the same country to I didn't have to make the sacrifice of seeing friends and relatives on a daily basis, still making 50.000 a year, free healthcare, fresher air etc. But I still look at it as an opportunity to gain a better life with my husband here. I have to, in order to be with him.

It's not a here-and-now move your have been suggested. Put your defenses down for a little while and at least look into your opportunities. Getting and education/studying to the point of having a US employer consider you as a candidate for a job. It's hard to look at the bright side I know but there really isn't many other alternatives in your situation if you're serious about wanting to cross the boarder again and have a status as a legal permanent resident.

The US isn't inferior, it's just not "all that". I suppose what a lot of us were trying to get through to you is there are much worse places in the world to go, and you ARE Canadian so going there is so very simple for you. As is getting government support.

Canadians are nice people, their healthcare is free, and it's quite pretty (among other things). If my husband was from Canada I would have had no issue moving there. Moving to the US was scary especially because of the healthcare situation... among other things. Unfortunately Americans don't have the best reputation, and my dad is one who didn't think much of them as a group so I've never thought "OMG I so badly want to move to the US". Never once entered my head. I did think of visiting, but then who hasn't :P

Australia is better than the US is many many ways. Of course healthcare for one, and also the government actually financially supports its citizens/LPR's that are struggling. I know there are SOME homeless people in Australia but it's just so prevalent here.. it's quite scary. We picked the US because Tony was still attending school at the time we started the process, and he felt a need to be close to his family. I was in the middle of a change in career, was living with my parents to help out with my dad, so it just made sense. Eventually I hope we move back there.

I know your situation sucks, and I was talking to my husband about the sh*tty position you're in and if there was anything we could do to help we would but I don't know anyone who lives there. It will be okay though. Tough, but okay.

Not sure where you're getting at but my answer is simple - I married an American not a Canadian. The real question would be why didn't we pick the country where the beneficiary is from instead of the US. I'm from Nicaragua, our decision was based on the fact that my husband (USC) has 10+ years at his job, whereas I only had 2 and his income was considerably superior to mine. Also, he doesn't speak Spanish but I speak English and have a college degree. I'm sure each couple weighed the pros and cons and then made their decision.

You happen to be on a site that is geared to applying for a U.S. visa for family or loved ones to immigrate here. We read your story about asking us how you could get a visa to stay here and we told you didn't qualify for a visa and that you needed to return to Canada. Some told you that Canada was pretty good to cheer you up. I like Canada myself but to visit. I could and never would live there myself. It is too cold and Socialized for my tastes. They do have some nice scenery though and pretty good beer. Try the poutine when you return. Sometimes it is great and other times sucky. Tim Hortons are just like any other Donut place though and the coffee sucks but that is Canada's answer to donuts so very little choice.

I was born here and not Canada; I don't have a reason to immigrate to Canada.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
