Actually I was wondering at all the profit they are losing by letting all the oil out all over the place...

Dung beetles are useful for keeping the environment clean....so a few of them are good to have around...however when there are multitudes of them everywhere in everything, it becomes a problem.

In all fairness the OP started with the leaking pipelines in Russia and then I threw in the Russian oil rig sinking on the second post so I guess this thread covers both.

As far as oil spills in the water... Exxon Valdez comes to mind seeing how it's the only one I know anything about. It did lots of damage and nothing but nature can fix it after the oil spreads out with the tide and waves. Microbes work to eat up oil in the water/ocean but only when in the first part of the spill before the oil has spread out. The Exxon spill could have been prevented if Alaska had grown some balls and demanded double hull tankers. The industry fought double hull tankers even after the spill due to the cost which is funny seeing how they make billions.

The oil industry spends millions every year on safety but only because they want a near spotless record to allow them to drill more. Anyone that knows about the oil industry knows it's probably the dirtiest of them all. From wiping out rivers and villages in third world countries to bugging phones here in Alaska at all the BP camps up on the North Slope. They have trip words that set off a recorder. Not only does your phone convo get recorded but it traces the phone numbers. It's pretty obsolete now with everyone using cell phones up there. They do this in order to track down whistle blowers. The oil industry provides a lot of jobs, but if anyone thinks they are playing it safe because they have a conscience should take time looking into oil industry violations.

With the leaking pipelines..oil and salt water corrodes those pipes quick like, and they not only corrode from the inside they corrode from the outside. It's constant up keep on those lines and it's costly, but then again it's a drop in the bucket for the profit oil companies see at the end of the quarter. Here in Alaska you can step on the tundra and ten years later that footprint will be there. When oil is spilled on the tundra it doesn't saturate into the ground like it does in warmer environment being that it's permafrost. It seeps super slow with the majority remaining on top and where you have a spill nothing grows there for years.
