Besides turning yourself in to INS, what are the options for leaving the US?

I have wondered this for a while. When I fly out of the US to South America, the plane is always packed to the gills. When I return, there is always plenty of seating available. This mystifies me. Why is this?

Is it possibly offset by people coming over "under the radar" and then leaving with no problem? What is it?

What do you do to return to your own country in the most legally correct way possible? What is the most easy way possible? What is a disaster? If you do turn yourself in to INS, what happens next.

No need to turn yourself in, just leave. They are not going to stop you or detain you at the airport, they want you to leave.

I can't fly without showing my ID. Can you?

Not everybody flies. I have not crossed the land border since I was very young so I am not so sure about that. What does a Colombian illegal in Texas do to go home with that many borders to cross?

You are right that a passport or other ID is required. You would probably have to apply for a passport and THEN leave. Or go to your consulate, get issued temporary flight travel documents and leave, or have them send you home.

Well, to fly you would need to show your passport or a temporary document like Vanessa&Tony stated. By land I'm not sure, but probably a passport is needed as well to cross borders in different countries. They won't stop you from leaving.

The first thing a person in that position should do is contact their nearest embassy or consulate, and ask them that question. The whole reason consulates and embassies exist is to provide "emergency services" to their citizens in foreign countries.

Imagine if you woke up in a hotel room in any country in the world you weren't a citizen in, with only the clothes on your back. That would be the first thing you would do - contact your local embassy or consulate. They should be able to set you up with, at least, an emergency travel document that would be enough to let you get on a plane and go home. Emergency transportation may also be available, depending on your precise circumstances, but that would be up to the consular officer.

A Columbian illegal in Texas does exactly this - the local Columbian embassy or consulate should be able to get them a temporary Columbian travel document and, if necessary, a flight home.

So if I were to hypothetically go to an INS office and tell them I am illegal, will I be deported right away or would I be detained and wait to see a judge? When deported, where do they drop you off? Right at the border? Capital of the country? City of birth?

I say call them and ask. Please let us know what they say.good.gif

Unless you commit a violent crime, the current policy is to tell you to have a nice day, and you are free to leave at any time. BTW, you won't even get into the building without an infopass.

If deported INS will buy you a one-way ticket to the city of your choice in your home country, usually that would be the Capitol city with a major airport.

Please tell me what an "infopass" is.

Thanks for clarifying that. If you are deported do you get banned for "x" amount of years?
