I am looking at one and might suggest it to my other half. I see people riding together on them every day, but they are whizzing past very quickly and I can't ask them about it.

This seems like a very cheap date to enjoy. Everyone on them is always smiling or chatting nicely.

Have you ever owned or rented one? What was your impression? Good? Bad? Ugly?

I used to be a big classic bicycle collector before I focused on classic cars and -- to a lesser extend -- classic motorcycles. At one point I had close to 100 bicycles, which tells you that I am definitely anything but normal.

I have two tandems: a 1948 Phillips, which to the best of my knowledge is the only rod brake tandem in the US, and a 1971 Gitane.

The latter one is so great for our purposes because I'm 6'6" and my wife is 5'8" and this thing seems to be a perfect fit. My wife is not much into . . . um . . . sports, so the tandem is a great vehicle as I can work hard while she is enjoying the scenery. We also have a wicker basket mounted on the handlebars so that our tiny Chihuahua can come along.

A tandem is no fun in town with lots of stop and go traffic, but it's nice on the open road. We have a bike path here that goes for miles along the beach and then drifts off to Ojai, a new age enclave about 18 miles away. Lots of horses and nature to observe,

my thoughts to you: since riding a tandem is not for everyone, rent one first before you buy. Find out if you both enjoy riding a tandem. Thereafter look for one that serves your needs.

Read about tandems what Sheldon Brown, arguably the greatest bicycle guru who ever walked the Earth, wrote:

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

President Teddy Roosevelt on Columbus Day 1915
