I have to disagree.

While there are crazy people who commit crazy crimes in every religion and even outside of any religion as the examples prove, this particular case is about religious extremism. The husband did not mutilate his wife because she was guilty of adultery, but because she wanted to learn, become an equal to a man. The closest thing to such a restraint would be the Amish who believe that education beyond the 8th grade serves no purpose. But no Amish would cut off somebody's fingers for trying to get a higher education, no Christian, no Jew, no Buddhist and no Hindu. This particular crime was based on Islamic doctrine, and while it would not be fair to point fingers to all Muslims because of the actions of one person, it is fair to say that without the husband's Islamic faith, this atrocity would not have happened.

I've never heard of Amish barbarians, and I don't have a good mental model of how Jewish barbarians would respond in an analagous situation, but you're only half right on the others. Christian barbarians tend more to use their fists, and Hindu and Buddhist barbarians tend to prefer setting people on fire to cutting off their extremities. Different kinds of barbarians prefer different flavours of violence, but most faith traditions have their barbarians, and it is the sacred obligation of civilized peoples of all faiths to fight their respective barbarians wherever they are found.

DON'T PANIC

This has nothing to do with religion. You're just baiting and you know it.

That has to do A LOT with religion, as every irrational and ILLOGICAL belief, It leads humans to do stupid things. It's just as simple as that..so simple yet most deluded mind can't grasp that. I see one here

I like to thank all of you for your thoughtful responses. So let me ask this question: is it your opinion that this man's religious beliefs had nothing to do with his actions to cut off his wife's fingers? He did not believe that a woman should not try to get an education, but instead be subservient to her husband? So the guy could have as well been a Protestant from Norway or the Netherlands?

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

You know us crazy Lutherans. When we aren't throwing acid and/or gang raping our wives, were cutting off their fingers. Next week were going to try out honor killings...someone said my sister made eyes with a Catholic while she was out in public without a male family member to escort her. For shame!

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Protestant from Norway or the Netherlands: fairly unlikely.

Protestant from Alabama or Mississippi: sad to say, it wouldn't shock me.

There are evil savages, barbarians in every sense of the word, who believe themselves (grossly incorrectly!) to be Christians, and label themselves accordingly. Not so many in some parts of the world as others, but every religion has some.

The unifying characteristic of the barbarians is the belief, universally held regardless of professed creed, that they themselves are entitled, or even in some cases required, to adjudicate, pass sentence, and carry out corporal or capital punishment against misbehaving people (women, in the vast majority of cases), in the complete absence of the legal and juridical infrastructure mandated by their professed religion, on their own, in the shadows, regardless of the actual teachings of the actual religious leaders of the actual religious community in which they live, and regardless of the actual laws of the nation-state in which they live.

Barbarians start with the desire to kill or maim, and believe their personal interpretation of their faith entitles them to do so, regardless of what anyone else in their local or larger national community, even the vast majority of their coreligionists, would think. They are murderous sociopaths, using their professed creed to justify following their violent impulses.

This form of psychopathic barbarism is distinct, in that it is not simply an expression of a community with regressive laws dispensing justice through well defined public institutions. A community that convicts a person of adultery in a public trial, and passes and carries out a corporal sentence, even a capital sentence, may well be abhorrent to our [or other's] community, but it is not being barbarous, per se. Barbarism is a particular mental poison that causes its bearers to confuse a sordid murder in a dark alley, with the solemn, though necessary application of capital punishment. Civilized communities may carry out corporal or capital punishment, but their civilization is defined by the openness , transparency, and solemnity with which they carry it out.

Civilized communities do their executions or floggings solemnly, in the town square, after a public trial in which justice is sincerely attempted to be done. Barbarians murder and maim privately, in the dark, and will never understand why this distinction matters.

This is a Christian man who married a christian woman.. this is a person i know personally... her husband didnt want her doing anything that may allow her some individuality... and painting? omg no way it was just too much of her time, of her energy, of her own personality coming thru for him to accept...she's a beautiful artist and thank God she's still alive.

Just saying that these men are everywhere... every corner of the world... some aren't as bad as others,(my ex was verbally and emotionally abusive with a distorted sense of what intimacy was) some are downright crazy but its everywhere!
