'I've got a surprise for you': Husband blindfolds his wife.... and then chops off her fingers to stop her studying for a degree

Hawa Akhter has said she will continue her studies, despite the horrific attack

A jealous husband is facing life in prison after chopping off his wife's fingers because she began studying for a degree without his permission.

Rafiqul Islam, 30, blindfolded his wife Hawa Akhter, 21, and taped her mouth, telling her he was going to give her a surprise present.

Instead he made her hold out her hand and cut off all five fingers. One of his relatives then threw Ms Akhter's fingers in the dustbin to ensure doctors could not reattach them.

Mr Islam, who is a migrant worker in the United Arab Emirates, had warned his wife there would 'severe consequences' if she did not give up her studies.

'After he came back to Bangladesh, he wanted to have a discussion with me,' Ms Akhter told The Times.

'Suddenly, he blindfolded me and tied my hand. He also taped my mouth saying that he would give me some surprise gifts. But, instead he cut off my fingers.'

Mohammed Saluddin, the Bangladesh police chief said that Mr Islam had confessed after he was arrested in the capital, Dhaka, and will face charges of permanent disfiguration.

Human rights groups are demanding life imprisonment.

'He was enraged. He was jealous because while he only had a grade eight standard education, she was off to college to pursue higher studies,' said Mr Saluddin.

Ms Akhter says she is learning to write with her left hand and is determined to resume her studies. She is now back at her parent's house.

The attack is the latest in a series of acts targeting educated women in the Muslim-majority company.

In June, an unemployed man gouged out the eyes of his wife, an assistant professor at Dhaka University, apparently because he could not stand her pursuing higher studies at a Canadian University. blink.gifblink.gif

 I must admit that was funny... Sure his case is an extreme one but I think he allowed his insecurities to get the best of him when he acted on them. All I'm saying is insecure men are everywhere. They may not all resort to physical violence but they are part and parcel of every culture.

Islamists protest women's rights in Bangladesh

April 05, 2011|By Farid Ahmed, for CNN

Dozens of people were injured in Bangladesh as riot police clashed with thousands of Islamists protesting women's rights, authorities and witnesses said.

The protesters damaged buses and cars Monday, setting several on fire, while police used clubs and tear gas to disperse the Islamists, who were wearing skullcaps and burial cloths.

"We'll die for the cause of Islam, but (will) not allow the government to disrespect (the) Quran," one protester shouted during the demonstration near the national mosque in downtown Dhaka.

The government recently announced its National Women Development Policy 2011, which ensures women expanded rights in property and education. The protesters said the policy is against the Quran.

Fazlul Huq Amini, leader of a coalition of Islamic groups called the Islami Oikya Jote, asked his followers to take to the streets to protest the policy. Amini said the Quran defines how much property a woman should inherit, and the government should not allow women more than that.

"It's against the principle of the Quran, and we'll resist it at any cost," Amini said.

Thousands of students in madrassas, or Islamic schools, carried sticks and logs as they marched the streets. Protests also took place in the southern port city of Chittagong and several other areas. Business activities ceased, and schools remained closed because of fears of violence.

"We had sufficient security measures to avert any violent incidents," said Benazir Ahmed, Dhaka's police chief.

The government said it had done nothing against the Quran. "Amini is misleading the people," said government spokesman Mohammad Shahjahan Miah.

Earlier on Monday, a madrassa student was shot to death in western Jessore district when police opened fire on the protesters.

Amini, a former lawmaker, said the protests will continue until the policy is scrapped.

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party lent support to the protests.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

So true. Women's rights are a tenet of Islam.

COme now LI... do you really think this guy was inspired by Islam to do this?

Why not also blame it on his race, nationality or favorite TV show?

Let's say he was "born again" hallelu-ha. Christian bible camp study on Tuesday, off to prayer camp for the weekend, koombaya, and all that. Would this have happened?

Show me a Christian or an Atheist/Agnostic that would "chop off" fingers because a women was seeking higher education.

Seems to me the phrase "chop off" is always in news stories in the Middle East. I think his upbringing, particularly his religion, had a huge play in Mr. Islam's crime.

Gotta love the part where it says one of his relatives left off with the fingers so they couldn't be reattached. There always seems to be a relative involved in these kind of things with those people.

it most assuredly would, and in fact does. there's been over 600 women murdered just in juarez, and over 3000 women missing there since the early 90s. and that's but one city in mexico, that's but one country in widely misogynistic and femicidal latin america. get real.
