The death toll is rising from flooding overnight in Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan. My wife has not heard from friends in the area and is afraid they are gone. They normally miss most of the strong storms in that area and people were just not prepared.

Another incredible natural tragedy for the poor people of the Philippines.

"The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!" - Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States, 1945.

Our house and family in Iligan seem to be OK. We only got a couple of sentences through yesterday after the news broke. They're helping other people. We know more from the news and pictures people are posting on social media sites. We are not in a flood-zone. Tsunamis and even just large storm surge waves are our principle threat.

As the OP says, this area doesn't get the big typhoons, so when one happens it makes for carnage. There's a picture of the college Lira went to with people huddled in the courtyard from the Tubod River flooding. That's just blocks from our place. It's pretty awful.

Landslides too. Makes you put some additional thought into building there next time.

a repost from University of the Philippines Prof. Judy Taguiwalo who got the post from Pia Montalban: "A friend of mine who's volunteering at ABS-CBN right now texted me. She said they were already at Consolacion to distribute the relief goods to the people, the people were already lining up, when suddenly they rerouted and went back to Balulang. The reason? Kris Aquino is there and they have to fetch her and go back to Consolacion ...so that she can also help.

Imagine the faces of the people already waiting for the releif goods; All hungry and thirsty and still covered in mud and they all needed fresh clothes to change into...They were shocked to see the ABS-CBN trucks leaving. All they can do is watch and wait for them to come back again. That's what my friend witnessed just a while ago."

Tsk. Please lang no, sa RMP NMR na kayo magdonate, kung sa ABS o sa anumang media outfit or telco gagawin lang nilang papogi at kapital ang inyong ambag. Jusmio naman Kris, panahon ng kalamidad. Have a break."

Personally, I'd rather these donations go to the RMP NMR or the Philippine National Red Cross, who makes sure the money is spent where it should be spent and not on publicity and somebody else's pocket.

Typhoon Sendong (international codename: Washi) whacked Northern Mindanao, Philippines, letting loose colossal floods across vast areas that left, according to official tally, 1010 people dead (and still counting) and nearly 800 others missing in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, and in some towns of Misamis Oriental.

Thousands are in the evacuation centers, many are women and childen--hungry, chilling, crying.

Let's do our part and help.

You can send food items, drinking water, used clothing, blankets, medicines, cash and what you have to the following dropping centers

Priority needs: Cooked food to eat, drinking water, Medicines, Sleeping materials (banig, blanket), Toiletries(soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, sanitary napkin), Undergarments, Slippers for adults and children, Kitchen Utensils, Clothes, Towels

You can send via Xoom (not the super expensive Western Union), by clicking this link http://xoom.tellapal.com/a/clk/xWpB registering for a new account (even for those who already got old accounts, just use a new email & a different card), use the coupon code "LIBRE", and even get a $25 gift card after a month. I just did this myself and already got my Amazon gift card (there are other options from other merchants). Walang katalo-talo, dahil libre na ang remittance (normally $5-$12), nakatulong ka pa, may $25 gift card ka pa.

You can also send your donations for Mindanao to:

Swift Code: BOPIPHMM

Account Name and Address: RMP-NMR Inc.
