My POE is next Wednesday. I'm driving with my dad and brother to New York for a holiday visit with my US family, and then flying to my fiance on the 31st. Besides my plane luggage, I want to bring a few boxes to ship from inside the US, since I imagine it's cheaper than shipping from Montreal now/later.

Would the border officers want to know exactly what's in all the bags/boxes? Since I have a visa and am moving, I assume it won't matter that I have a lot of stuff? I'm visiting and THEN flying, so will the officers get suspicious at the amount of stuff (ie "you can't possibly be flying with all that") or does visa/moving give me a free pass to bring stuff with no hassle (as opposed to my dad and brother trying to bring that much stuff, since they're only visiting)?

1 should have a list made up, but many times they wont even ask for it.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

If you are entering with your K-visa...bring everything you want to bring, they will expect that you are bringing your stuff with you. Just make a list of what you have in your boxes (clothes, household, etc.) to show them in case they ask. If they want they can look in the car ... when I went they didn't look or ask what I had in the car. Don't hold back, here's your chance to bring stuff!! :star:

You can explain, if asked (which I doubt you will be), that you are planning on shipping your belongings from within the US as it is cheaper than doing so from Canada. It shouldn't be a problem. Make a list of the contents of your boxes - eg Summer clothing; kitchenware; personal care items; shoes; books, etc. You don't need to get too specific.

You should also make a separate list of anything you are bringing as gifts that will remain in the US. Those are dutiable while your personal belongings are not.

Instead of shipping through USPS, check into UPS. Couriers are always cheaper for boxed items than the post office and tend to be more reliable.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Moving my stuff by car was a breeze..although they moved stuff around and made a mess and i kind of had to repack stuff. I tried shipping a few boxes via Canada Post..my advice? dont..its freaking expensieve..so was UPS on my work account..and some of my boxes came damanged like my 7.1 pioneer surround receiver..grrr that really ticked me off..it was bashed in on the top..still worked but the metal was all dinged :( and i even over protected the thing with tons of foam and packaging :(
