My fiance, an American citizen, is coming down at the end of January to get married. I'm in school until the end of April. Should be go through the CR1 visa process while I'm in school or apply for the K1 visa and get married in the US? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each, and which one do you recommend?

Going the CR1 route beneficary gets a GC upon entry into the States, K-1 you have a whole process to go through still. Requirements for approval of either about the same so I read. Don't read of a time advantage of one over the other.

If you get married in January, your only option will be the CR-1.

Here is a nice VJ comparison chart for you: http://www.visajourney.com/content/compare

If you go the K-1 route and are a Westerner, you would interview through the less busy Vancouver Consulate. All CR-1s and Eastern K-1s interview through Montreal.

For Montreal the process for K-1s getting interviews is apparently not fun. There are many threads on trying to get interviews.

Most of the other points would be covered in the guide I linked above. I'm sure you'll have more questions once you read a bit more. :)

Hello, and welcome to VJ. :) I'm confused. Your "fiance" is a male US citizen and he's coming down to the US in January to get married? A K-1 won't work for him, then, as you have to be unmarried to receive it. I'm going to move your thread to the General Immigration Discussion forum until you know what process you're going through. The link to the guides is the best bet at this time. :)

I just assumed he was "coming down" from Alaska to Canada...couldn't think of what else that would mean. :)

Haha funny. My husband is Canadian and I live in Michigan. He has to "come up" to see me as he lives in Windsor. They call it the Miami of Canada. It's often warmer there than it is here. Seems strange huh?
