To apply for a SSN I will need to go to the local SSN office and bring the documents below which prove my eligibility to file for a SSN:

1. The SS-5 form which is downloaded from the internet.

2. My Passport including K1 visa

3. My I-94

4. Another valid form of ID (Birth Certificate)

5. The RM 10211.530 which is List of Documents Establishing Lawful Alien Status for a SSN Card application. This includes AR-3 AR-3a “Alien Registration Receipt Card” (Evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence)

I need to make sure I bring all the documents. Some SSA staff will not be aware that a K-1 Visa Holder is eligible to file for a SSN.

Once I have successfully applied for my SSN, the card will come in the mail within about 2 weeks. I can check on the status of the SSN application a calling to the SSA office. If I need your SSN before it arrives in the mail I may ask them for an SSA-7028 “Notice to Third Party of Social Security Number Assignments” to be sent to be sent to interested third party once a SSN has been assigned. Your card, when you receive it, will be marked with the words "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH INS AUTHORIZATION" indicating to an employer that you must also have an unexpired EAD to be eligible to work.

I think you're good to go. I had the same docs. SS-5 form, Passport, K1 visa and I-94. I even showed my Birth Certificate but the lady said they don't need it.

I would add that you should write down your experience should you have problems. IE date, time, SSA person you talked to and the supervisor's name as you will ask for a supervisor should the first person not be of any help. Then e-mail the main SSA office from their website and explain what happened. You should get an e-mail telling you to go back and show them this e-mail so they get educated about K-1 visa holders. If you have no problems then you can forgot about all of this and enjoy the fact that your SSC is on its way. One quick question: Has the person getting the SSN received mail at the current residence? My wife's SSC was returned by the letter carrier because her name was not on the mailbox.

Good luck,

Dave

Don't need this, we didn't use it.

It's in the SSN guide here on VJ. Here's a link to it, though. Just print it off and take it with you in case the person you speak to isn't aware that K1's are eligible.
