For many men, proposing in the grounds of Buckingham Palace in the full glare of the public eye might have been just a little bit daunting.

But, perhaps, if you have faced the Taliban and saved a wounded colleague, plucking up the courage comes a little more easily.

Private Bryan Johnson popped the question to his girlfriend yesterday at a ceremony honouring his bravery.

Popping the question: Private Bryan Johnson got down on one knee and proposed to girlfriend Kirstie Ward in the grounds of Buckingham Palace yesterday. Miss Ward accepted

The young soldier, from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, was in London to receive a gallantry medal for his part in a heroic rescue in Afghanistan last year.

And minutes later, he picked the perfect moment to go down on one knee and surprise his partner Kirstie Ward – who said 'Yes' to the all-important question.

Private Johnson said: 'I knew I was going to do it, and luckily managed to get up enough confidence.

'I dropped to my knee and fortunately for my sake she said Yes.'

Private Johnson, 24, who was brought up in Glasgow, but now lives in Corby, Northamptonshire, then popped a ring on her finger.

Honoured: Private Johnson and his new fiancee were at the Palace so the soldier could receive the Military Cross for his part in a rescue attempt in Afghanistan last year

Brave: Prince Charles presented Private Johnson with the award, which was given after he showed selfless courage in dragging a wounded comrade to safety before giving life-saving first aid and covering fire as the man was evacuated

Miss Ward, from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, said: 'It was a real surprise. I'm shocked and excited.'

Asked about Private Johnson's bravery, the 21-year-old said: 'He's amazing.'

Earlier, the Prince of Wales had awarded the soldier the Military Cross for showing selfless courage in October last year, when he dragged a wounded comrade to safety. He then gave life-saving first aid and covering fire as the man was evacuated.

Private Johnson said: 'I never even thought twice about it. I just ran forward and got him.'

Well, as the Scots like to say, it takes a Real Man to wear a kilt! Nice story, too.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Something wrong with this story, if he served in combat zone, was decorated and returned from his time there, how is he still a private. Almost any military in the western world, serving in combat and be decorated also warrants a promotion.

Maybe the reporter doesn't do research properly or could be don't understand the true story. Some of them left out what most important of the article is. Even news outlets like CNN or AP do sometimes.

More interesting like the dude's skirt is what he's wearing underneath.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

President Teddy Roosevelt on Columbus Day 1915
