-How far you can go without destroying from within what you are trying to defend from without?

-We must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex.

-We will bankrupt ourselves in the vain search for absolute security.

-A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both.

Dwight D. Eisenhower

Someone should have showed this to Bush Jr. right before he was sworn in the first time.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

:wow:

Now to stay on topic:

When they call the roll in the Senate, the Senators do not know whether to answer 'Present' or 'Not guilty.'

To take from one because it is thought that his own industry and that of his father’s has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers, have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association—the guarantee to every one of a free exercise of his industry and the fruits acquired by it.

Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson

Here's the beginning of the entire quote which is titled, The Basis of Taxation:

The taxes with which we are familiar, class themselves readily according to the basis on which they rest. 1. Capital. 2. Income. 3. Consumption. These may be considered as commensurate; Consumption being generally equal to Income, and Income the annual profit of Capital. A government may select any one of these bases for the establishment of its system of taxation, and so frame it as to reach the faculties of every member of the society, and to draw from him his equal proportion of the public contributions; and, if this be correctly obtained, it is the perfection of the function of taxation.

....

How far it may be the interest and the duty of all to submit to this sacrifice on other grounds; for instance, to pay for a time an impost on the importation of certain articles, in order to encourage their manufacture at home, or an excise on others injurious to the morals or health of the citizens, will depend on a series of considerations of another order, and beyond the proper limits of this note. [* * *] To this a single observation shall yet be added. Whether property alone, and the whole of what each citizen possesses, shall be subject to contribution, or only its surplus after satisfying his first wants, or whether the faculties of body and mind shall contribute also from their annual earnings, is a question to be decided. But, when decided, and the principle settled, it is to be equally and fairly applied to all.

....

The whole text refers to whether a person should be double-taxed.

Stan:	Who are the corporations?

Woman 2:[a blonde with a psychedelic fish on her shirt] The corporations run the entire world. And now they fooled you into working for them.

Stan:	Are you serious?? We never heard that.

Driver:	We just spent our first semester at college. Our professors opened our eyes. The government is using its corporate ties to make you sell magazines so they can get rich.

Kyle:	Ugh! Those dirty liars!

Kenny:	(Sonofabitch!) [throws down his shoulder tote]

Man 2:	[has finished his chips] This is a really nice town you have here. That's why the corporations are trying to use you to take it down.

Stan:	Well... Well what do we do?

Driver:	Just hang with us for a bit. We'll fill you in on everything you haven't been told. [Man 2 resumes eating chips]

“If the natural tendencies of mankind are so bad that it is not safe to permit people to be free, how is it that the tendencies of these organizers are always good? Do not the legislators and their appointed agents also belong to the human race? Or do they believe that they themselves are made of a finer clay than the rest of mankind?”

“…..Throughout our history, America’s confronted constantly evolving danger, from the oppression of an empire, to the lawlessness of the frontier, from the bomb that fell on Pearl Harbor, to the threat of nuclear annihilation. Americans have adapted to the threats posed by an ever-changing world. “

Barack Obama 7/16/08

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
