yes you definitely need both...especially your birth certificate which will be used at other stages of your journey as well

I looked somewhere on internet that if i don't have birth certificate, i can also have notary letter from my parents with my birth details. Is it true?

Processes on alternative paperworks on lost birth certificate is not as simple as notarized letter from your parents. Every Country has their own way of how to process lost birth certificate. I'm sure this needs a legal process. Try ask the country where you were born on how to get an affidavit from your country's department that handles Birth certificates.

Good Luck!

Because you will interview in London you need to follow their instructions for that part of the process. Here is their list of documents needed for the interview and discussion of birth certificates or what they will accept. http://london.usembassy.gov/interview_documents.html

What they don't tell you is that you most likely will go through additional processing after the interview before they issue the visa because you were born in India. There are additional security checks and most India born I have known waited 4-8 weeks for those to clear after the interview in London. Don't book a flight until the visa is in your hand.

Hi mate

I am about to apply for K-1 and I also have lost my original birth certificate. I was born in Thailand and now I am living in Denmark.

Fortunately, my dad still lives in Thailand, so I have asked him to go get a new birth certificate for me from the municipality in Thailand.

In my case, the municipality where I was born kept another ORIGINAL birth certificate but they cannot hand that to me, however, they could issue an authorized copy of that original.

I am pretty sure, I must have the original document for the consular interview. So I have talked to the Thai consulate here and they told me that, the municipality in Thailand can issue

a "Proof of birthplace" statement which states my name, date of birth, place of birth, my father name and my mother maiden name.

I just have to meet up at the municipality with two witnesses and a proof such as passport, national ID etc.

That proof of birthplace is not birth certificate but it basically states the same thing and can be used instead of birth certificate.

So try to talk to the authority where you were born, they might have different procedure.

It is very common for people to have lost their birth certificate, my parent's birth certificate are like 50-60 years old paper, they are so yellow and fragile that if you remove them from the plastic cover, they would turn into ash

Indian passport holders applying for visas outside India should obtain a statement from their local embassy or consulate confirming they have no criminal record.

Sounds like if you don't have an Indian passport anymore, then you can't get a police certificate from the Indian Embassy in London. The interviewer is likely well aware of this, but you could write a letter of inquiry to the consular services asking how to obtain one when you are Indian by birth but have held a UK passport since _____, then when they reply you can't, you've got documentation to prove you tried.

Indian Police Clearance Certificates should be obtained as follows:

  • All Indian IV applicants aged 16 and above, residing in India, should obtain police certificates from the local Passport Office.
  • Indian passport holders applying for visas outside India should obtain a statement from their local embassy or consulate confirming they have no criminal record.
  • Non-Indian IV applicants residing in India should obtain police certificates from the District Police Station serving their area of residence.
  • Indian police certificates are not available for foreign (non-Indian) applicants applying outside India.

if your not an indian passport holder then my advice would be to contact the indian embassy but from the way that reads then you cant obtain a certificate

edit... looks like i was beaten to it while i was looking on the embassy website lol

Police certificates from your present country of residence and all countries where you have lived for 6 months or more since age 16 (Police certificates are also required for accompanying children age 16 or older)

I lived in Thailand until I was 16, then I moved to Denmark about one month after my 16th birthday.

I assume I don't need police certificate from Thailand right?

Thank you
