Hi everyone...

I just landed in the US and I'm pretty worried about getting a job here.. I did a few searches and found that most jobs require 2-4 years of experience...

I am looking for an entry level job in Network administration..

I have a bachelors degree in telecom engineering from NED University in Pakistan ....

I would really appreciate if some one can guide me..

Dont' know how much help I can be but I can tell you I work for an international company and I see that the ppl coming from other countries have had to take other classes or training (not always) to be able to be hired in their field of study.

All you can do is keep searching. you might try a temp service just to get your foot in the door somewhere... just be sure if you do that the temp service doesnt' have a year contract on you so that if the company decides to hire you after 4 months as a perm employee that you are stuck in 8 more months with the temp service.

I'm impressed by your chosen field of expertise. I have a soft spot

for fellow telecom employees. I worked for Verizon for 8 years :dance:

seriously - find the local office, go in , talk with the first person you see , ask for the list of telco/telecom companies in NYC.

As for 'how useful it is for you' - I am unsure, I not know anything your 'job finding skills' when yer given a list of telco companies .

I worked in telecom for almost 11 years here in Denver and from what I saw, it wasn't too difficult to get your foot in the door. I worked at AT&T, ICG Communications, Lucent and Level3 and in all of them it was just a matter of applying. Nowadays most people go through a temp/contract agency where they'll recruit people for a 3, 6 or 9 month contract and then the company decides whether to offer you full time position or not. That's why I highly recommend Dice.com because you will not only find jobs being offered by real companies but you will also find agencies recruiting people for contract positions. At this stage of the game you just need to get some experience in the US so any part time or contract job will help you out tremendously.

As far as being part of a union, some people like it, others don't. It's just a matter of preference but most telecom companies here in Denver (not sure about NY) don't go through a union.
