The largest US export is its culture.

You know it. Just read this in the St. Pete Times a little while ago:

Hip-hop gangstas — in Baghdad

Eight million Iraqis — a quarter of the population — have been born since the U.S.-led invasion of 2003, and nearly half the country is under 19, according to Brett McGurk, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York and, until recently, senior adviser to the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

So after years of watching U.S. soldiers on patrol, it's inevitable that hip-hop styles, tough-guy mannerisms and slangy English patter would catch on with young Iraqis.

Calling themselves "punky," or "hustlers," many are donning hoodie sweatshirts, listening to 50 Cent or Eminem and watching Twilight vampire movies. They eat hamburgers and pizza and do death-defying Rollerblade runs through speeding traffic. Teens spike their hair or shave it Marine-style. The "Iraq Rap" page on Facebook has 1,480 fans.

Yeah, that was I thought. My fiance told me they would never knew if I'm Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai or Japanese and I don't runaway from my country just because the thing happened to me. It just because I found an American to fall in love with. Thank you for make me feel better!good.gif

I think everyone gets a bit scared going to a new country, but I am sure your fiance will take good care of you!!

Another company pulls advertising from TLC’s ‘All-American Muslim’

By Dylan Stableford | The Cutline – 8 hrs ago

On the heels of a controversial decision by Lowe's Home Improvement to pull its advertising from TLC's "All-American Muslim" following protests from a conservative group, another company has decided to do the same--though it claims it was not because of the backlash.

In a letter of apology to customers, an executive at Kayak.com, the online travel site, explained the decision to stop advertising on the new reality show.

"When we decided to give our money to TLC for this program, we deemed the show a worthy topic," Robert Birge, Kayak's chief marketing officer, wrote in the letter posted on the site. "When we received angry emails regarding our decision to advertise, I looked into the show more thoroughly."

Birge continued:

The first thing I discovered was that TLC was not upfront with us about the nature of this show. As I said, it's a worthy topic, but any reasonable person would know that this topic is a particular lightning rod. We believe TLC went out of their way to pick a fight on this, and they didn't let us know their intentions. That's not a business practice that generally gets repeat business from us. I also believe that it did this subject a grave disservice. Sadly, TLC is now enjoying the attention from this controversy.

Birge said he received bulk emails from members of the Florida Family Association, which last month launched an online campaign to pressure marketers, like Lowes, to pull their advertising from the program.

"TLC's 'All-American Muslim' is propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values," the group wrote. "The show profiles only Muslims that appear to be ordinary folks while excluding many Islamic believers whose agenda poses a clear and present danger to the liberties and traditional values that the majority of Americans cherish."

The group said 65 advertisers targeted by the campaign agreed to pull their ads from the show. (However, a spokeswoman for TLC told THR that there remains "strong advertising support for the show." )

"The amount of vitriol in the emails was saddening, but I didn't exactly feel pressured," Birge wrote, "not to mention we wouldn't bend to such pressure."

The Lowe's decision to pull its ads sparked a backlash from Muslim groups and supporters of the show. The company apologized on Facebook, which led to an avalanche of vitriolic comments. (Ted Lieu, a state senator from California, told the Associated Press that he would help initiate a boycott if Lowe's did not apologize.)

Birge admitted that the "decision comes across as bending to bigotry," and "it also appears that we did not support people who deserve support as people and as Americans."

"For that," he wrote, "I am profoundly sorry."

Birge added: "Mostly, I just thought the show sucked. Based on our dealings with TLC and the simple assessment of the show, I decided we should put our money elsewhere. Apologies again."

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Yeah you guys are pretty brilliant. I am thinking here. Muslim women are not allowed to go outside without male/relative escort, but muslim consumers expect female providers at every doctor's office. Which means, to meet the expectation of muslim consumers, muslim teachings have to be violated.

Probably the provider should be expected to teleport in and out of the office?

Probably might be a good idea to look at clearing up some of the stupidest logic on the planet, the basic stuff, before one worries about waving the flag of how educated or politically savvy any one group may or may not be. After muslim governments stop arresting people for questioning stupid laws (example: If women are allowed to drive, it encourages homosexuality according to a recent un-named group of shria lawmakers). It IS pretty savvy to pass the law saying you can get arrested for questioning that nonsense before you issue the actual nonsense (laughing)

Muslim consumers are worth 70 billion dollars in this economy. We are better educated than most Americans, have lots of disposable income, and operate in some unexpectedly high places. If these companies think we can be marginalized, they're not doing their due diligence. We are far more politically savvy than most believe us to be.

Some are smarter than others. I pretty much live at Best Buy lol.

You do realize we're in America, right?

No matter how you slice it, cheeseburgers and rap videos win out given a long enough time line. See the above post about Iraq. Capitalism will conquer all!

Didnt read all of the thread. My husband was born and raised in pk. He was in pk when the twin towers went down. Said people were giddy and shop owners were giving away sweets in Islamabad. I was told here on vj that hes a liar. Ok. Just sayin.

We both agree the show is extra boring anyway. We will still show at wherever. Not cuz its boring but because we don't care. Meh.

No translation available. One thing for sure, P&R threads about Muslims bring out the the weird and the worst in some folks.

Irrational fear and hate-mongering will do that.

Just look at how scared we are of blacks, and they've been here for 400 years.

Good deal Cincinnati never had any race riots with their 45% African American population.

Cincinnati is probably the most racist city in the Midwest.
