Hey guys,

For those of you that have both Canadian and American passports, can you travel into Canada using your Canadian passport and then travel back to the US using your US passport?

One of the reasons I ask is the way I go home now has Nexus lanes and I have a nexus card, but only my Can. passport is attached to the card right now and I haven't been able to change it online.

I do it all of the time. I go to France with my French passport and come back with my American passport. Been doing it 2 times a year since I was a baby and never had a problem.

Yes, but last time I entered Canada with my CDN passport, they treated me like I was trying to scam the government or something by driving a US plated car. Since then I always enter with my US passport. No hassle.

Yep, Canada passport entering Canada , and of course ya have to use the USA passport to get back into USA! When I drove from DC to Saskatoon this summer in my USA plated vehicle and dog, never had a problem.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Canada recognizes multiple citizenship, the U.S. does not.

As a U.S. citizen, you will have to leave and to enter the U.S. with your U.S. passport. Since Canada recognizes multiple citizenship, you can also enter and leave Canada with your U.S. passport. So basically you didn't even need a Canadian passport any longer as soon as you have an U.S. one, could use your U.S. one exclusively.

Since the U.S. does not recognize multiple citizenship (they only recognize it exists -- don't ask, don't tell), you cannot enter or leave the U.S. with your Canadian passport. That would be misrepresentation of a U.S. citizen posing as a foreign visitor to a federal agent (CBP officer), which is a felony.

Things are different in other countries. For example, the U.K. does recognize multiple citizenship, just like Canada, yet requires U.K. citizens to enter and to exit the U.K. with their U.K. passport.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
