What shook me was that these forums trace your IP address instantly and will point the militias at your house !

Too true Charles and I know all forum boards have access to Ip addresses and use them to spot fake /duplicate users etc (along with other means which are classified !)

What worried me is that I live in a remote town where everyone knows everyone.

If an extreme right wing militia group knows I live in this lil 'ole town , then if they gather a few snippets of info about me, then it would be no trouble at all to identify me

For example - you can look at my IP address right now and you know my town

You know that I am a member of the rifle club here

A 2 minute phone call to the club at 10am about "that British guy" would get you my name and address if you were a militia man with connections - (and they have connections)

Thing is, with the liberals, the worse they would do is invite you to a gay party, but with the extreme right wingers - it's really menacing

unless there is only one isp in your town, it's headquarters is located in your town, you've not much to worry about.

for example, i use hughesnet. i'm in kansas. my isp is located in Germantown, Maryland (which is where a whois will point to). good luck looking around maryland for me.

Yes I use a local isp which only services this area.

I have tried looking their IP number up and yes I can see my town !

I could move to Charter which would, as you say, be thousands of miles away, but their service is pretty bad.

I sold my boat to a guy on craigslist a few months ago. He bought the boat unseen from 900 miles away and sent me check. Then he said he would have to work abroad for 3 months and would pick it up after that

EVERYONE said he was a scammer and the check would bounce and I was a criminal for paying it into my bank

I was called all sorts of names on the 'detect a scammer' site (used to that)

Anyway, turned up 3 months later with his Utah truck and took the boat and that was that ! The check cleared 1st September

The reason I relate this, is that on the email he sent me, I looked at the IP address embedded in the header, and traced it - and it was 2 miles from his stated home in Utah ! That gave me some comfort.

If you say you are hiking the Appalachian trail when in fact you are shacked up with a beauty in Argentina - and you send your wife an email from the hotel to say its lovely on the trail - she can see that the IP address is Argentina if she knows how - so careful you Newts out there
