I was googling some stuff and ended up on a far right wing politics forum (NOT VJ)

They were true nuts and were on about the President conspiring to hand the drone over to Iran and lots more crazy stuff.

Posters were screaming horrible obscenities about Muslims and urging the military to drag the President and his family out of the white house and shoot them after a 2 minute military tribunal

Etc Etc Etc

Unbelievable !

Naturally I had to make a gentle post which steered them towards a more serene way of trying to replace the president at the next election, and in particular I suggested that they are putting moderates off with all this stuff and they need moderates if they are to win.

Now let me get to the punch line

The original poster, posted that he lived in my area and the people there were 90% Republican church goers and fine people and thought in the same way as the previous posters. He then went on to say some really menacing things and suggested I leave the country

I had not registered to post, so this person must have been a moderator or the owner of the site and must have read my IP address and traced it to my town

Now these people are extreme militia types - the sort of people who are known for murdering abortion doctors and running about with guns in the woods and threatening to kill the President

I felt really uneasy that they knew my town and were able to make these aggressive statements which were definitely menacing

We are all concerned about the government snooping on our communications, but I reckon the real threat is when we post on line, not being conscious that we ARE going public and we are KNOWN and some really dangerous people could be noting our every word

I would never try and cheat on VJ by using cloaked IP addresses (by using Virtual Private Network tunneling via a free server say in Belgium), but I wonder if I should be using that method for general surfing

This internet stuff can be dangerous

Perhaps another approach you could consider Alan, would be to stop trying to antagonize everyone you meet online.

I am entitled to my political views and in this case I made them very low key

In the case of right wingers, that is enough for them to hate to the point of violence

You know they exist and they do murder

I can assure you it was a very gentle post saying that threatening to kill the President might not help their cause in the eyes of the center voters

The point of this thread is to warn people as to the transparency of their internet connection and to see whether they take technical steps to protect themselves

You aren't suggesting that people with liberal views bring violence on themselves and somehow deserve it are you ?

Oh you are one of those people who 'SAVES' up quotes from days and weeks and months ago and then pulls them out to 'USE' when they get beaten in a debate

No more along the lines of "discression is the better part of valor", or perhaps "don't poke the bear". If it's a partisan forum, they don't want to hear liberal political views, and you're not doing yourself any favors by posting them.

ok I can accept that - they don't want to hear any other views because they are essentially fascists

Fascists never engage with persons holding different views , they just want TOTAL control so that they can repeat their package of policies using a form of brainwashing

I can understand that tactic - it's been done before in Europe - several times

What shook me was that these forums trace your IP address instantly and will point the militias at your house !

I have always thought that being known online was no big deal because I am not a spammer or a scammer or a pedo

It never entered my consciousness that dangerous people are not content with just swearing at me - they actually want to know where you live, and they have the means.
