Hi VJ's

Just wanna ask everyone! i just recently go married and we have our Marriage certificate. I already applied for my SSN and still waiting for the card. Been here in the US for 1 months already. My husband wants to add me to his bank account. Is this possible already? I know they need 2 valid ID's..if I can be added, what are the valid ID's which I can bring with us?

Thnx!

Your passport is one. I was able to use my Canadian DL as a second so if you have any government issued identification in addition to your passport from the Philippines you should be able to use that. I was able to be added even before I had my SSN but I did have to update them when I got it. If you have applied for your SSN, wait until the card comes in and then use the two pieces of identification in addition to that and give it a try. Some banks are understanding about new immigrants and some aren't.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

How long waiting for the SSN? Alla had her NUMBER less than 48 hours after arriving and card in hand 5 days after arriving. I added her to my account the second day after she arrived. She used her passport and the K-1 visa as IDs (the K-1 IS a separate government issued ID)

If you have been waiting longer than that for your SSN go back and get someone that knows what they are doing.

Here in Texas we used the marriage license and passport to get the SSN, then we used the SSN, passport, and marriage license to get the state ID., then we used all the above to add her to my bank account at Chase.

BOA told us that the Passport and K1 visa are just one ID. I did told them I do have an ID issued by the Internal Revenue (BIR) which is one of the valid ID I had used in the Philippines. But then they said they only accept foreign DL. I am hoping my SSN card will be here already this week tho.

When I first moved to Houston, I went to a Wells Fargo to open an account. I waited for more than an hour and then was told that, as a citizen, I was required to have a credit card plus SSN to open a bank account there. Non-citizens (or as often the case here, illegals) only are required to have their DNI (national ID). I don't know it that is still the same, but I was so disgusted that citizens were treated as less valuable than cheaters that I have never gone back and if they are the sponsors of any event/person/item/whatever, I am less inclined to have anything to do with it. That was about 7 or 8 years ago.

Each bank has its own policies so it might be worth it to check around.

I was able to open a bank account here in Texas with just my passport. They said to just go back to them once I have my SSN so they can put it on record. My husband and I were so surprised. Once I had my SSN, we went back there to put my name in his existing account for a joint account, as well. I was also able to get a State ID with my passport, I-94 and marriage license.

hi my wife was able to open her own savings a week after arrival using her passport and Philippines Driver's License with no hassle at all. I was also able to add her up to my checking account so we have joint. We have account at Chase bank. She also got her SSN before marriage and went back to the bank to update her SSN card after she got it. Summary: You can open acct and join an acct with using your passport and Driver's License :) Good luck to you!

Chinook opened an account at Wells Fargo bank using her Social Security number and her passport.

We did the same at Wells Fargo here. The day after she got off the plane we went to the Soc Sec office and she got a temporary #/card until her SSC got to us in the mail and that same day we put her on my account. It was easy as pie.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

hi,

i had the same problem when i get here and got married i would like to open my own bank accnt and hubby want to put my name on his bank accnt we tried to call many banks and they said NO GC no bank accnt or joint accnt.sucks

So they only have account holders who are LPRs or USCs?!? I don't think so. Having been thru the process of dealing with banks when someone dies I understand that they are trained maybe a little bit better than the SSA people we have to deal with :hehe: . I really hate having to train people to do THEIR job. I would ask the bank person what a foreign person is to do because they do not have those documents and if the answer does not satisfy me, then I would get the branch manger or take my money elsewhere. It is amazing what happens when you state you will be removing all your money instead of opening an account.

The truth be known, I opened another account before Chinook even arrived in the U.S. It was a joint account at Wells Fargo for Chinook and I. To open the account, I used a copy of Chinook's passport bio page and a copy of another random ID of hers. My banker opened the account based upon my signature alone, and on a promise that I would bring Chinook in for her signature and her SSN once she arrived in the U.S. and had a SSN.

It pays to know your banker.
