Hi everyone. I'm booking flights with my K1 visa and after I ve enetered the States I ll need to take another flight to my final destination. One question...how long a layover should I be looking for, how long does handover of visa documents etc take? I'm asking for myself and my two children who are travelling with me....all help and experience gratefully received :)

Depends on where you would be entering from, different places may take longer than others depending on if they are a very large busy hub airport.

it depends on a lot of things, like many incoming international flights at the same time, then there are long lines at the poe,and your 2 children, some times you are taken to a room with other people waiting to be called, you should allow your self enough time to catch the connecting flight,3 hours is good.better to wait 3 hours, you don't know when the next flight is if you miss your connecting flight.have a nice trip, welcome to the united states,

Thanks for the replies. Three hours seems a fair bet. Anyojne happen to know (long shot) which airports proccess most efficiently...I guess there're a lot of variables, but are any to avoid entirely?

Fly from Dublin or Shannon in Ireland. They are POE's. MUCH QUICKER than the POE's in America!

The "POE process" takes about 46 seconds. You wait in line for 2-3 hours at JFK for the process to begin

For JFK allow four hours between flights. Others I do not know

In my signature below, there is a link to look up the airport you are entering at and see what their averages are for processing incoming folks. That should give you a baseline for minimum time (I'd add to that, though, especially if you possibly have to re-check in for a domestic flight also).

Good luck and please, report back here when you have gone through this. It is a "popular" concern.

It took my husband 30 minutes total including the waiting time to get through Atlanta. However, it was a weekday afternoon and he was alone so perhaps it was not as busy as it could be. They seem to know their stuff there, so I would think a 3 hour layover is enough time.

Thanks guys, no layover needed though. My fiance, being the sweetheart he is, wants to leave nothing to chance so is driving all that way to collect us from Atlanta...no second plane required ad no faffing about with missed connecting flights :)

We went through Houston. We allowed a 3 hour layover when we booked the flight and the process took about an hour. We had lots of time to kill at the airport.

A side note to POE. Do I have to be at the airport when my fiance enters the US or can I wait at the final destination as she will have to take an additional connecting flight to be home.

You don't need to be there. You can meet them at the final destination if you want.
