Obama: More than one term needed to revive economy

President Obama says he will need more than one term to revive an economy that began developing problems years ago.

"Reversing structural problems in our economy that have been building up for two decades, that was going to take time," Obama says in a 60 Minutes interview to air Sunday night.

"It was going to take more than a year," Obama says, according to excerpts released by CBS News. "It was going to take more than two years. It was going to take more than one term. Probably takes more than one president."

Obama, who recently saw the unemployment rate plummet from 9% to 8.6%, also says it's possible the rate could be as low as 8% when the 2012 election rolls around in November.

But "I'm not in the job of prognosticating on the economy," Obama tells Steve Kroft of 60 Minutes. "I'm in the job of putting in place the tools that allow the economy to thrive and Americans to succeed."

[/url]Obama also says Americans have a right to be impatient with the pace of economic recovery, and uses a sea-and-weather analogy to describe their continuing frustrations:

"Sometimes when I'm talking to my team, I describe us ... as ... I'm the captain and they're the crew on a ship, going through really bad storms. And no matter how well we're steering the ship, if the boat's rocking back and forth and people are getting sick and ... they're being buffeted by the winds and the rain and ... at a certain point -- if you're asking, 'are you enjoying the ride right now?' Folks are going to say, 'no.'

And are they going to say, 'do you think the captain's good -- doing a good job?' People are going say, 'you know what? A good captain would have had us in some smooth waters and sunny skies, at this point.'

And I don't control the weather. What I can control are the policies we're putting in place to make a difference in people's lives."

When Kroft asks Obama if he over-promised during the 2008 campaign, the president replies:

"I didn't over-promise. And I didn't underestimate how tough this was going to be. I always believed that this was a long-term project."

India, gun buyback and steamroll.

This should really come as no surprise why look at FDR.

Despite the accolades left-wing historians have showered on us for years (even duping many)

with all the gov. programs and all the spending and with all those terms in office,

HE NEVER GOT THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE BELOW DOUBLE DIGITS UNTIL HE EITHER DRAFTED EVERY MAN IN THE MILITARY OR EVERY PERSON WAS IN A FACTORY ARMING EUROPE.

Fortunately for us the world is not at war (if it were China would be the supply house this time, let's hope they are on our side) but on the other hand..... what hope does Obamer have a saving the economy without a world war?

Unemployment in 1940

was either 14.9 or 9.5 depending what scale you use.

Obama's good for Alaska. He likes to drill and so do we. If he says it's ok to drill, then the Dems in DC say it's ok instead of shooting him down like they did with Bush. Four more years of Obama means Alaska is that much richer. We need ANWR opened up for drilling and supposedly that's on his list of things to do.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

FDR created alot of government programs, but in the end he tried to maintain a balanced budget.

One man that is often overlooked is Takahashi Korekiyo. His policies allowed Japan to basically escape the depression. After he began to ask for cuts to military spending he was assassinated...

I can't help but find the irony in this from today's perspective.

Obama is toast. He isn't getting a second term if the GOP candidate is remotely electable.

He made too many promises to too many people that he was not ever going to be able to fulfill. Part of it was not his fault. There were people crying literally for joy when he got elected. It was ridiculous. He's a human not a god.

On top of it he was guaranteed to piss off at least 70% of the conservatives and 50% of the independents 'just because' of opposing views.

You can irritate a lot of people but you cannot fail to deliver and irritate people.

Bin Laden was killed under his watch which is points, but him taking full credit for that would be like Clinton taking credit for the economic boom. These things started long before.

I voted for the guy because I felt McCain was a worse option, not because I liked Obama. I couldn't stand the idea of more kids coming home with no arms and legs to save a bunch of warmongers who run around killing each with an archaic source of fuel as the driver.

This time around I'll vote for nearly anyone BUT Obama. So he doesn't get a second term in my mind.

Don't count him out, there is still a LONG way to go. Also, expect the Demo sleaze agents to dig something out for the usual October suprise.

If you call yourself a republican you have been duped. If you call yourself a democrat you have equally been duped.

So whats your point? Everyone should stay home and not vote? The system is not perfect, but we need to work within that system and enact reform.

Do you have an alternative plan, or just like to feel intellectually superior by insulting others?

Even with Obama's mistakes his mistakes pale in comparison to Bush Jr. That said, the Republicans have a line up of Disney characters making a play for the presidential bid, and until they stop catering to the hard core wing nuts out there, their chances of beating Obama this time around is about zero to none.

Again this is why I would like to see a third party that is geared for mainstream America. Not so far left, and not so far right...but something in the center of both.
