I think this is a fundamental divergence Slim. For a lot of liberals, that statement comes off as flippant, and callous. I can see your point, I just don't agree. I don't think that killing other people should be acceptable. Even when someone like Richard Ramirez or John Wayne Gacy is put to death, it's not something that should be celebrated.

I don't think death should be celebrated either. I found it ironic we saw firemen cheering at the news of bin Laden's death yet we scorned the Palestinians when they danced in the street after 9/11. "It's OK... as long as it's the 'bad people' doing all the dying." I'm with you on that. It's wrong no matter what.

However, we should retain the right to defend ourselves against anyone that would do us harm. I'm not against the death penalty but I'm not a big fan of it either. Too much legal mumbo-jumbo and it requires us to step over the line of defending ourselves and start playing executioner. There's a big difference there. A fundamental difference and it's not about the person getting killed... it's about the killer.

Killing to defend your own life is not only moral, it's a natural obligation. Killing as "punishment" is vastly different.

I also think you are wrong about law enforcement. Their goal is to protect and serve. I suppose that is up to individual interpretation, but when it comes down to it, they try and protect the lives (and property) of the people under their charge.

I'd like to believe on a personal level, most LEOs do this. They're genuinely good people who try to help their community. But, the system as a whole has failed because, as Leatherneck alluded to, the laws they enforce don't serve or protect anyone. LEOs simply respond to crimes and process the aftermath of what should rightfully be handled by the community of citizens.

I believe in a persons absolute right to protect themselves. What I don't understand is this bloodlust that you people seem to have in situations like this. The way you speak of it, it almost seems like you fantasize about situations like this, the opportunity to legally kill someone.

I am celebrating the LIFE of the innocent person and it makes me VERY happy that she is alive and the bad guy ended up dead.

I find it exceedingly strange, bizarre and mentally twisted that one would not be happy for this woman!

I would be very sad if I had to start a thread saying "If only this woman had a gun maybe she would still be alive" What kind of whacko would have to be to prefer that thread?

The goal of law enforcement is to preserve lives, not advocate killing (don't mistake that for suggesting murder). I have not heard the tape, nor have I read the story (thanks Gary for mentioning an news story, but not providing at least a link), but unless the person was in imminent danger, that would seem like the correct course of action. Furthermore, you will generally won't hear law enforcement, on any level advocate that you kill someone, unless your life is in immediate danger. If you want to live in a society that allows you to carry any firearm, and regular wild west shootouts, I suggest you move to Somalia.

I AM the source, no need for a link.

And if you want to live in a society that allows anyone to carry firearms and NEVER has shootouts, move to Vermont. Better food than Somalia too.

Speaking of shootouts, the newest videos from California today show a man standing in the street and shooting at passing drivers until someone called people with guns to come and kill him. At first I thought it was some new video game, but no, just life in California, shootings in streeets, beauty salons. What a horrible place to raise children. Somalia must be learning from California.

If you don;t believe me, google it!

The right person took a bullet in the OP, that does not prove guns make anyone safer.

Are you disappointed this woman defended herself? You would prefer she was killed?

No. And no. I am saying your oft repeated assertion guns make people safer is not supportable via this story.

There are many others I need not use only this story.

What happened to your statement about the "shootout in Vermont" yesterday? Hmmmm? edited? Why would that be?

Before I post my response to your edited post about a non-existant shootout in Vermont yesterday (oops I started to repsond before you changed it so it is still right here) Why did you post false information? How does it support your position?

 What! That statement defies logic.

A 66 year old Mrs. Donna Hopper fires 2 warning shots before firing the 3rd fatal round to the perps abdomin.

And to you "that does not prove guns make anyone safer."

If 2 warning shots did not deter him, then maybe she should've opened the front and invited him in for a glass of warm milk and cookies.

Here's an easy one for ya, is this traumatized lady, physically unharmed because she had a firearm or because she sprinkled some magical fairy dust to deal with the perp?

Well, you do have a point. Proven by his freshly printed toe tag and his very own slab in the county morgue.

Wrong state, hence the correction. I am not so pompous that I believe I can never make a mistake. I surely do.

You can post all the stories you want where the good guy shoots the bad, however there are at least as many where the opposite is true, and even ones where the good guy is shot with his/her own gun.

As another poster put it in this thread, certain VJ gun nuts glee over these stories reflect poorly on gun owners in general. Your comments certainly fall into that category.
