Getting an SSN and USPS

How do I register my name at an address with the USPS?Tried asking them and they had no idea what to do with me. I heard that the SSA won't mail your card unless your name is registered at the postal address where you live. I just landed in the US and have no idea what to do.

hi. my hubby working in USPS, he just put may last name in the mailbox in the small piece of paper so the mailman know you lived on that address. coz your still using your maiden name not your husband last name..

The "official" statement by the USPS is that they will deliver all correctly addressed mail. That is BS. When I was in a college town in Kansas I had that white piece of paper on the inside of my maibox. One day I receive a letter for someone else. I knew were they lived so I put it in their mailbox. The next day that person's name was on that white piece of paper. I took it out and whited out that person's name, but forgot to put it back by the next day. It took me about a week to get mail resent to my mailbox and all I did was remove a white piece of paper.

Now more forward to this past year when the finacee arrived. She received mail, but for some reason the NOA1 for her AOS was returned as undeliverable. A card I sent her for woman's day was returned to my work address. I went to the local postoffice and asked #######. I was asked if her name was on the mailbox. I mentioned their website and what it sates. He only repeated the question. He gave me a form in which you can specify what mail goes to that address by last name or choose to have all mail delivered. I also put my name on the inside of the mailbox along with the wife's. Some letter carriers are better about deliverying all mail and others take it upon themselves to filter the mail they deliver--most likely the problems in delivery occurred when our regular letter carrier was off and we had a substitute.

We rely on the USPS for the USCIS to deliver our responses from them and yet they tend to not use a trackable method--at least the GC came priority mail and was trackable. For what we paid in fees they should always use a trackable method so we can see what happened to any letters sent from them. I asked the SSA if we could pay to have the card tracked--they said "NO". The option we used was to have it delivered to the local office and go and pick it up.

Sounds like it all depends on your particular postal district. In my area they will deliver any and all mail to the address it is sent. Your fiance should have some awareness of what USPS does where he lives. Certainly no harm in leaving a note in the mailbox.

Non of the mail boxes on my street have the name. Just the house number.

My fiancées SSN just arrived yesterday at the house. It was the first piece of mail she ever received at that address.

I live in an apartment complex and I'm not sure if the names listed on the rental agreement get forwarded to USPS, but we've got the names listed inside the mailbox and that works.

I even added the names of my cats on the list inside the mailbox, and the cats get mail too. (I mostly sign them up for all sorts of freebies)

If you want to be on the safe side, for the first few pieces of mail, add a second address line as "C/O USUAL HOME DWELLER" (means, "in care of")

e.g.

New Resident

C/O Old Resident

101 Anyway

City State ZIP

or even

Old Resident

Attn: New Resident

101 Anyway

City State ZIP
