Do I really need to put a specific date for intended departure on the I-131?

On the I-131 (Application for Travel Document) Part 3, Question 1 Date of Intended Departure, do I really need to put a specific date in there, or can I put 'Unknown', or should I just leave it blank? I don't really have any specific date in mind yet, I just wanted to send this in together with the I-485 application. Thank you for your reply.

You don't need to put a date on it, but if you put a date on it - it might help get the 131 approved sooner for you and you would have the card incase something happend and you had to travel quickly.

Your I-129f was approved in 5 days from your NOA1 date.

Your interview took 67 days from your I-129F NOA1 date.

AOS was approved in 2 months and 8 days without interview.

ROC was approved in 3 months and 2 days without interview.

So it's just OK to put any date on there even if I won't use it at that time.

you need to put a date on it, a tentative date, say if you plan to leave sometime in february, put feb 1 (any safe date that would leave you plenty of days to prepare) or any date a month from now (if you don't have clear plans). They need a date to see how soon you need the AP, which by the way is not a card but a document with very important information on it saying to the effect that while you don't have your greencard, you are allowed reentry to the US within the doc's effective/limit date.

I dated my form thirty days before our intended wedding date, as I figured I'd want to move down here and get all that pre-wedding running around donw in the weeks leading to the big day.

Thank you for your reply.

K-1 filers DO NOT need to put a travel date on the forms. It is not required because you get the AP papers anyways. It is a lump filing of AOS EAD and AP together. AP comes in a combo card with the EAD now when filed together.

"lump filing" is an option, not required, to save on fees if you apply separately (didn't apply w/AOS then decided you needed it after sending in AOS papers)

USCIS to Issue Employment Authorization and Advance Parole Card for Adjustment of Status Applicants

Feb. 11, 2011

WASHINGTON—U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) today announced that it is now issuing employment and travel authorization on a single card for certain applicants filing an

Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, Form I-485. This new card represents a significant improvement from the current practice of issuing paper Advance Parole documents.

The card looks similar to the current Employment Authorization Document (EAD) but will include text that reads, “Serves as I-512 Advance Parole.” A card with this text will serve as both an employment authorization and Advance Parole document. The new card is also more secure and more durable than the current paper Advance Parole document.

An applicant may receive this card when he or she files an

Application for Employment Authorization, Form I-765, and an Application for Travel Document, Form I-131, concurrently with or after filing Form I-485. USCIS will continue to issue separate EAD and Advance Parole documents as warranted. Employers may accept the new card as a List A document when completing the Employment Eligibility Verification, Form I-9.

As with the current Advance Parole document, obtaining a combined Advance Parole and employment authorization card allows an applicant for adjustment of status to travel abroad and return to the U.S. without abandoning the pending adjustment application. Upon returning to the U.S., the individual who travels with the card must present the card to request parole through the port-of-entry. The decision to parole the individual is made at the port-of-entry. Individuals who have been unlawfully present in the U.S. and subsequently depart and seek re-entry through a grant of parole may be inadmissible and ineligible to adjust their status.

Just put unknown. Don't make up a date. That's lying. You won't get into trouble if you had a date and you don't leave then, but I'm loathe to lie on the forms, even when I know it's not a "big deal".

There is no requirement for a date. There is no requirement to "need" AP as the "need" is that you're filing for AOS. This is explained in the instructions.

The AP is either a card or paper. If you apply for the EAD and AP at the same time you will be issued a "combo card". If you apply for the AP separate it will come as paper. If you apply for a child it would be paper as they don't get the EAD so no combo card.

Actually the fee for EAD and AP are still waived if filed AFTER having filed AOS (but prior to approval). In order to ensure the fee is waived you send a copy of the NOA1 from the AOS with it.

The form DOES ask for a date but you don't need a date. AP is an "in case.." type thing. Not everyone has a need for it. I wrote unknown and had no problem.

Again, AP is either paper or a card. Depends on your circumstances. If applied together with EAD it WILL be a combo card.
