One big difference, of course, is that Stalin had purged 95 percent of his high ranking military officers in the years prior to the war. The red army couldn't have taken on the Germans even if they wanted to.

Whoever has the most die wins the war?!?! That's an odd way to pick the winner.

No one "picked" a winner.

The Soviet Union lost more than 20 million people in that war and a huge, far too huge, number of them were women and children that were murdered because they were slavs. 10 times as many people died in Leningrad than died in Hiroshima.

No other country in the entire war can even come close to the loss in raw numbers, percentage of population, material destruction. It would be foolish to diminish the sacrifices of real people because of a disagreement over politics with their leaders. The children that were bayoneted and tossed in holes were not communists.

Anyone married to a woman from the FSU should respect that fact. She had someone in her family, or more than one someone, that was killed in that war. She also believes those people to be the greatest heros the world has ever known. Do NOT pick that fight with her.

If you ever have the good fortune to visit the FSU and the old veterans board the bus with their medals pinned to their coat, get up and give him/her your seat and say "Spaseba Bolshoy!" There are not many left anymore

Read up on European history in regards to WW2. They either fought with the Germans or got killed by the Russians..that goes for the Cossacks and Romanians...the Italians had no excuse for siding up with the Germans. But for the first two, it was either a NKVD bullet in the head and/or slave labor camp, or fight the Commies.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Agreed Gary there were victims on both sides. But before the Axis powers started killing Slavs, the Bolsheviks were butchering Eastern Europeans in just as bad of manor...from skinning people alive while they were tied to a tree, to throwing hand grenades in packed jail cells for the fact they ran out of bullets and they wanted to kill as many Ukrainians and Poles as they could before the Germans caught up to them. The Russians were every bit the barbarians as were the Germans not to mention that almost a third of the NKVD were Jewish hence the reason Eastern Europeans were killing Jews almost as fast as the Germans were when the Russians retreated.

I cant think of one modern instance where the american military met an equal force and won

Iraq - 25 million versus 300 million

hate to point out to you that national population means squat, it's not the actual population that's fighting.

additionally, here's where the odds were pretty even - and the us won.

desert storm/desert shield (known nowadays as the first gulf war)

Coalition casualties:

392 killed[6]

776 wounded[7]

Kuwait:

1,200 killed

iraq casualties:

75,000+ wounded[720,000-35,000 killed

75,000+ wounded[7]

total strength:

Coalition:

956,600[5]

iraq:

545,000 (100,000 in Kuwait)

link

the reason i say that was pretty evenly matched - a rule of thumb when attacking is to have 3-1 odds as the defender has the advantage.

Even the revolutionary was was a French victory with more French troops than American troops at the final battle.

If it wast for the French, the Americans would still be speaking English

The south in the civil war were no match

Iraq - 25 million versus 300 million

Vietnam - the under dog won easily

Afghanistan - the poorest country on earth almost with a small population - 10 years and counting

Grenada - honestly ?

Panama honestly ?

Battle of the bulge - what a laugh - occupy Oakland would be tougher

However El Alamein was a dashed good show old fruit where Rommel got the full Monty and they didn't like it up 'em

El Alamein

How's the British Empire doing now?

The US attacking Iraq is not quite a match of equals and cannot be portrayed as such ..

The US spends more on the military than ALL the other countries of the world combined . If they cant beat a country of 25 million then it would be a poor show indeed, and is hardly a matter for congratulation and admiration

The show the Vietnamese put up was indeed spectacular. The US had 500,000 men there and total air superiority and was still whupped by guys in black pajamas

The US need to up its game and set its comparators higher if it gets in a scrap with a nation of 1.5 billion who have tactical and strategic nuclear weapons

The US has one inherent advantage over the rest of the world: Not only do we have nuclear weapons and the means to accurately deliver them in less than twenty minutes anywhere in the world, we have actually used them on an enemy -- twice. No other nation on the planet can say that.
