Hey

I came over here on a K1 visa, got married, and got my green card approved a couple weeks ago... i got my green card in my hand last week, so i went into social security to get a SSN number.... my information apparently wasnt coming up on the screen so they had to take photo copies of my documents to verify it with home land security... is this normal? they said it can take up to 4 weeks but it wont... you wouldnt think it would be a problem seeing as though ive been approved and got my green card... anyone had the same dramas get a ssn?? so frustrating as i cant apply to study, cant work, cant get my drivers license, cant do jack all!!

No one can have a definitive answer for you. I can only advise patience.

You may want to wait until week three and go back and try again. It may be that the information is not in the system yet. It is like going in after the POE most people advise waiting two weeks before attempting the SSN. This may be the same case here. I would go back after it has been over two weeks since the GC arrived and try again. Note the date, time and person you talked to. If there are still problems I would e-mail the head SSA office and ask them why your information cannot be retrieved and maybe they can either retrieve it or give you assistance on your next step.

Good luck,

Dave

well, here's some logic branches.

go back to THAT SSA office with the application form, yer passport, yer greencard.

have the clerk look you up in the SAVE database by your VISA NAME and by yer A# in the visa. (that's 2 look ups)

If you are found both ways, there's no problem.

If you are found only via A#, yer name was incorrectly entered into the SAVE database by the CBP data entry clerk that made the record of your entry into the country.

If you are found only via VISA NAME, yer A# was incorrectly entered into the SAVE database by the CBP data entry clerk that made the record of yer entry into the country.

What to do, if this error? SSA office can't fix it - you'll need to show up in person at yer local Customs/Border Patrol Secondary Inspection / deferred inspection office, get the shift supervisor, show them yer copy of the I-94 and yer visa stamp in yer passport, and ask them to verify the data entry record for you. They can fix it there, live, in real time, but you must go in person.

A few days later, get back to the SSA office, apply again.

Good Luck !

I went in to apply for my SS card 3 weeks after our wedding and never had a problem. Some are just :bonk: One question Dave I saw you came through Atlanta? How so from Australia did you get a direct flight to Atlanta?

Well, you could have applied for the SSN after about three weeks of your arrival but obviously you waited. Now you wait some more.

Dave,

sure you can work.

Your Green Card is a LIST A document for work and I-9 purposes, meaning it's the only document you need to proof who you are and that you are authorized to work. No SS card needed as long as you live. You'll just tell your employer that you'll give them the SSN as soon as you know it. Thousands of people do this every day, my own daughter included.

Edited by Brother Hesekiel

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

You need an SSN number to work regardless of if you use it to support your I-9 idiot...
