Full set of 4 tires for a passenger car that would be kept for a while, combination driving, speeds up to 80 mph. Driver prefers good handling/wet traction, doesn't care about road noise, understands that tread-wear warranties are a joke, has the budget for only something like the following. Which would YOU prefer, and why?

Cooper Response Touring (apparently sold only at Sears); or

Kelly Explorer (sold at Pep Boys & independent shops)?

These look similar to me and seem to have largely decent owner ratings. A non-VJ pal asked me to help research these; I promised him that I'd pass along any first-hand insights, si man. (I have recent experience only with the Uniroyal Tiger Paw AWP.) Thanks, si man.

A member of consumer reports so went and looked at Cooper and Kelly ratings there and 2 coopers were in the mid of the ratings and Kelly's didn't even make the list. If you have a choice of these two brands only then choose the Cooper according to the site.

I would call some mom and pop tire shops and get a price quote on a set of 4 used tires. You are probably talking about $120 to $160 out the door installed total price for all 4 tires.

With 80% tread still left (practically brand new).

You'll be good for years!

Appreciate it very much, si man, and no offense taken (or intended) re earlier exchange, no man.

Everyone's input is appreciated, si man. I'll probably tell my pal to go with the Copper... er, Cooper tires, if he can get a firm drive-out price quote from Sears. He can probably call the auto center's manager and get that, si man. Much grass again to all.

I don't mean to tread over old arguments but figuring out what brand of rubber your car should be shod with is nothing if not a tiresome task. If your friend can't get a firm drive-out price on tires tell him to bring an air pump so they don't inflate it, PV=nRT, man!

PV=nRT, man!
And Algebra is the national language of Algeria, see man!

The thick plottens. Buddy informs me that he called two independent shops; one recommends the Kelly Explorer Plus flatly, and the other says it's a better tire than the Cooper. Second shop undercut everyone else's price. Buddy is, uh, thrifty (when he gets a $10 bill, he folds it up so tightly that Alexander Hamilton gets ingrown whiskers), so this may tip the scales back to the Kelly. Good grief, man.
