Full set of 4 tires for a passenger car that would be kept for a while, combination driving, speeds up to 80 mph. Driver prefers good handling/wet traction, doesn't care about road noise, understands that tread-wear warranties are a joke, has the budget for only something like the following. Which would YOU prefer, and why?

Cooper Response Touring (apparently sold only at Sears); or

Kelly Explorer (sold at Pep Boys & independent shops)?

These look similar to me and seem to have largely decent owner ratings. A non-VJ pal asked me to help research these; I promised him that I'd pass along any first-hand insights, si man. (I have recent experience only with the Uniroyal Tiger Paw AWP.) Thanks, si man.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Tell the friend to go price more tires. Go to NTB and other such stores and see what they have. In our area we live in getting s good traction in all weather is good. Best idea is get all 4 tires if all is warn down.
He's priced them (I've helped him), and he's narrowed the choices to these; NTB and several other places are too rich for his blood. He's in our area, so all-weather traction is a given, and he needs all 4 tires. Edited by TBoneTX

Get what you pay for.

Out of those two than either is a decent choice. Tell him to ask if they are going to charge for anything more to mount them for him. At some places will charge to mount and balance the tires for each tire and charge a disposal fee to get rid of the old tires unless you take them away yourself. Some will do this for you at no extra charge if you buy all 4 from them.

I personally always buy a Michelin or similar brand. I bought a Japanese brand this last time as I have heard excellent stuff on them. I like a lot of tread on my tires.

Si, man; most places charge for disposal and for balancing (and for valve stems). This pal always declines the road hazard.

I figured that either choice would be decent, and I appreciate that validation. Would ideally still like to hear from someone with personal experience with either brand, si man.

I do have personal experience with both brands from many years ago when I had less money to spend for quality. They are both decent brands when bought brand new and properly balanced and mounted.

My tires I bought brand new recently will outlast these brands by almost double but I have to pay for that ability. I understand that he is unable to pay the amount I was able to do so now. I did not mean to offend.

Ask him to check out his dealship too. Sometimes they have really good deals. I just bought a set of 4 Hankook high performance run-flats from the dealership. The dealership had a buy 3 get 1 free sale, plus there was a manufacturers rebate. So I ended up paying around $300 which was more than 50% of the regular price.

Don't like either brand. Cooper's ride too hard, and Kelly's don't last. Don't skimp on tires. You get what you pay for.
