If you are approved on the spot, it is possible - but it is getting more and more rare to be approved on the spot, and to be given the I-551 stamp. Do you have an AP? If you do, you can travel with that.

Then if I were you, I would prepare for spending the holidays here, unfortunately. There is a chance you could be approved in the interview and given an I-551 stamp, but I personally would not count on it and wouldn't be willing to risk losing the price of the flight..

I think it's random and depends 100% on the IO or local office policy. I've heard that some IOs take the EAD/AP, others clip it/cut it/otherwise render it invalid and others do nothing at all.

The IO at my wife's AOS interview didn't take her's. He didn't even ask to see it.

BTW - She was approved, but not "on the spot" since he told us everything looked good and if we didn't hear from him by the end of the day, it was approved. In other words, approved 8 hours +/- later.

FWIW, I was approved on the spot, they took my EAD/AP but DIDN'T give me a stamp. I asked and was told that if I needed to leave the country before the GC arrived, I could come in (InfoPass presumably) and explain my need, and they would do it.

we were approved on the spot and stamped as well. Maybe you could just ask after the interview if it all goes well. They may do it. It is up to them.

Just an FYI though, when we went to the airport they didnt care about the stamp and demanded to see a greencard. Luckily ours arrived the day before she left for Russia. I have been told that the airport staff dont know that the stamp has the same validity as a greencard. So you may have some difficulties trying to fly. Leave extra time to find and speak with someone who knows the rules. A flight desk attendant is not an immigration agent so they may not know the rules.

Our IO told us to just come back any day after the interview to get the stamp if I needed to travel before the green card came. You can do it with the info pass appointment. He said they would do it immediately. If you really want to go home, it can be done.
