We're not married yet and we will probably have to wait a year after the wedding to file (if I decide to get my MA at home, which is very likely).

If the situation was different, I'd have him send the paperwork the day he goes back to the US. :D

Sending the paperwork very quickly after the wedding should not raise any red flags. It should be normal that a newly married couple wants to be together ASAP.

... a whopping 17 days here.. Most of the forms were filled out for the I-130 before goign down for the wedding.. Works out well as you need his/her signature ov various forms so you don;t have to wasit time maling things back and forth later... Did not seem to make a difference.

I don't believe it.. Prove it to me and I still won't believe it. -Ford Prefect

We had our civil marriage in December and only waited until February to file because we wanted to add in the evidence from the religious wedding ceremony in Feb. We marched into the consular offices the week after the ceremony to file via DCF.

If you have all the evidence you want, filing the same day as your wedding wouldn't make a difference. Every couple's timing needs are different. Just do it when you have everything ready, early or late.

My fiance and I have been working on the K-1 for months but have recently decided to instead file for the IR-1/CR-1 for a number of reasons.

The top two reasons are we want his parent to attend our wedding. If we were to marry in the U.S. instead of India then there is a high possibility of them not being able to attend due to visa issues.

And we figured that we could always do a wedding ceremony here in the U.S. for my family after he arrives here.

Second, the chances of CR-1 approval for an interracial couple going through India seem to be much more in our favor than the K-1 visa.

My question is how long did all of you IR-1/CR-1 filers wait to file after you were married? Would it look suspicious if we filed right away?

Right now we are planning on getting married in India in the spring of 2012 and would like to file shortly after. It would be nice if I didn't have to spend our first Christmas as a married couple apart!

Thanks!

I don't think it matters how fast you file as long as you can prove you guys been a couple for as long as you will say. I'm pretty sure it won't be a problem for you guys...my sudggestion is for you to file it ASAP after marriage. Good luck

We filed almost 4 months after we got married. We would have filed sooner, but we were both busy with work. I agree with those who've said that filing soon after the wedding wouldn't be a problem if you had enough evidence of a bona fide relationship.

we filed in couple weeks after marriage.

There is no such requirement that you have to wait before filing - if that us what you are looking at.

No I wasn't worried about a de facto requirement, just more of an issue with a red flag. As in it appearing that we quickly got married and then rushed to file the CR-1.

But we've been together for 3 years and may be doing a small informal engagement ceremony in January with his family, then we plan on getting married in late spring.

The engagement ceremony is more of a formality thing, K proposed back in April :)

It seems like it doesn't matter when you file, as long as you support your relationship with ongoing evidence. Thanks!

I am the petitioner.
