Two new Hawkeye State polls show Ron Paul and Rick Perry on divergent paths in the GOP presidential race. The Texas congressman is right in the thick of things, next to contenders Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney. But the Texas governor remains stuck in the second tier.

A Des Moines Register poll shows Paul with backing from 18 percent of likely GOP caucus-goers. That's behind Gingrich's 25 percent, but ahead of Romney's 16 percent. Perry is tied with Rick Santorum for sixth at 6 percent.

An NBC News-Marist statewide poll has Paul at 17 percent, behind Gingrich at 26 percent and Romney at 18 percent. Perry fares better in this survey, tying for fourth at 9 percent.

An added bonus for Paul in the second survey is that he's the only GOP candidate not currently losing to President Barack Obama in a hypothetical general election match-up in Iowa. Rather, the congressman ties Obama at 42 percent among the state's registered voters.

Perry's lack of movement is particularly troubling for his campaign, given that he has invested heavily in advertising in Iowa.

Gingrich won't be the nominee, he has far too many skeletons in his closet to actually win a general election.

Exactly. There's a lot of time left before the election and too much will come out about old Newt. He may have to "suspend" his campaign as well.

Ron Paul's been constant since the 1970s. He's gathering support, not at risk of losing what he has. All the other candidates started with a number and support has been shifting around amongst them. RP's numbers just keep going up as the others drop off and as more and more RWNs start to see the light. When you really get down to brass tacks, he'd be the perfect candidate against Obama. They couldn't be more opposite.

There are a lot of deluded Ron Paul supporters. Many of them have no idea about his positions on many key issues beyond the soundbites on the internet. I think they would be surprised.

Unlike many politicians, his positions are clearly spelled out on his website. Even Juggalos can find them and read them for themselves.

The other beauty of Ron Paul's campaign is it's supported by history. He's one of those guys that has voted the way he said he would for the last 30 years.

And if they know his positions, they don't actually understand them.

Because his positions are really intricate. "Lets do what it says in the constitution." Yep. That's a tuffy.

But they will try none the less to explain them, in the comments section of a youtube video. He is the candidate of choice for ICP and the Juggalos.

As opposed to Sarah McLachlan, Celine Dion, KD Lang, etc.

We should all form our political alliances based on our favorite musician's political leanings. Great idea!

The point that you managed to completely miss Slim, is that many of Ron Paul supporters are misguided, leaving full on campaign adverts in the comment section of a youtube video. Just checked out his page, he doesn't delineate some of his more insane or controversial positions, like his stance on abortion. But for the most part, he has most of his more benign statements and positions on there. But, if you do a bit of digging, you can always uncover some of his more batsh!t crazy speeches.

Aren't there misguided supporters of every candidate? And do you measure the candidate by their positions or their supporters?

The nice thing about Ron Paul's stance on things like abortion is he nails it. His position is exactly right. "The federal government has no business getting into the specifics of abortion. Government should support and protect life but abortion is not the federal government's business."

Surprisingly enough, his position on most other subjects is very similar.

What are these "batsh!t crazy speeches" you're talking about?
