Hello VJ, I will be going to Brazil for the New Year; when I return I will bring my fiancee back with me. We are planning to be married as soon as we get to Salt Lake (Jan 14). I noticed the items in the K-1 chart show applying for the SSN is just before getting the marriage license. Is my fiancee required to have her SSN before we can be married???

Thanks,

Tye

SSN is not needed for marriage in many states, call and check with your county.

SSN is not needed for AOS but is needed to get put on a bank acount, a drivers license, car insurance, a job, health insurance etc. It is very important to have an SSN.

However, I applied after marriage so I could get my SSN in married name and have 1 less document to change my name on.

It's normally suggested that the immigrant get the SSN paperwork done prior to marriage as the name on the visa matches the name in the SSA database. It's also because the I-94 has a 90 day expiration date, and when you get close to the end of that visa the SSA offices often refuse to issue the card as you are close to the expiry date and your status either HAS changed from fiance/e to husband/wife or is about to.

Have a read of some of the threads where the fiancee/wife has been denied the SSN because of time restraints.

They shouldn't, but they do. Many people have had to take in the printed regulations concerning SSN issue to spousal immigrants in order to make the staff accept that the card SHOULD be issued with sufficient identification.

Inky and Brit make very good Points !!

What they are describing is the US version of a National Identity Card. Of course all of us in the US are in denial that we have a National Identity Document. We dont want to have anything in common with those "other countries", so we just call our National Identity Document a "Social Security Card".
