I was not sure where to post this question so I figured this might be the best place. My fiance lives in the Turks and Caicos Islands and we have been talking by phone mostly which gets very expensive. It's generally cheaper for him to call me but with his visit here this week (I am so excited (L) ), I was thinking about getting a prepaid phone or prepaid SIM card for him to use with his phone or maybe have to buy a phone for him to take back.. not sure how this all works. But being as I have an unlimited plan to call any US number, that would be the best route, but I am not sure what services work best down there.

Has anyone had any experience with this or knowledge on where I can look? I have been looking at AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile prepaid plans but doesnt say much. He wont use it to call me, just for me to call him since mine is unlimited. But if it's roaming, even if I call, will he incur a roaming fee?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi there! I'm unsure about phone plans, but I do know that some phones from the US don't work out of the country. I just remembered- I think my son went to one of the the Turks and Caicos Islands a couple of years ago. I can't remember which trip it was- but I will ask him if he was able to use his net10 phone- which is a 10 cents a minute phone plan (actually not a plan but you buy a card and refill minutes).

You might also want to check into PINGO http://www.pingo.com/en/home.do If you use that to call him- it could be .12 a minute. I'm not sure how much you are paying now- but I have used PINGO for several countries and it is very safe, reliable, and you can refill your Pingo minutes by PayPal if needed. I use it on my cell to call my fiance in England- There is a way to use SKYPE with your phone- I haven't looked into it, but I know you can do it. Good luck finding a plan/phone. I think he will incur a roaming fee if you call- but maybe if you called and just let it ring- then he called you back? We do that with Pingo- I don't have international calling- but I can call him with PINGO so I ring him and he calls me back. Good luck!

I buy calling cards at www.callingcards.com, i was told by a man at Best Buy that the pre-paid phones they offer wouldn't work internationally, i was considering getting one when i went to Morocco. I dont know a lot about cell phone roaming charges as i do not own one so hopefully somebody else has better knowledge of that than me.

I use T-mobile. They offer some special monthly plan. If you pay like $20.00 a month, you can have unlimited international texting. (I'm not sure the exact price, but it's a decent #) I also used to have another cellphone which had a simcard from the philippines. My fiance would text me there. (Didn't cost me a dime for that). We also use skype for our long conversations.
