OK Kira's professor friends from St. Petes who live here during the school year teaching at the local university gave her some kind of fkd up mushrooms in a jar full of ...I'm guessing it's milk (?) and she keeps it in the cupboard under the sink...and drinks out of it. ####### is this stuff? I'm not going to try it myself...but I'm curious...is this a common food and does it have a name?

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I have never seen anything like that in Siberia... When I asked my husband what it might be, he didn't know, but he said his grandmother told him that if you put a frog in milk it will keep it (the milk) from going sour.

If it is mushroom, maybe salted mushrooms from the forest...but most likely you would not be drinking the brine...then again..who knows....but if it is milk...it could be KEFIR...I make this myself and the Russian wife loves it...the culture looks like a booger or squishy translucent mushroom. Kefir does not need to be refrigerated, but needs to be refreshed every couple of days. Plain or mixed with fruit...its all good....if made properly it can be like effervescent yoghurt or a basic yoghurt drink.....real caucasus kefir grains last FOREVER....I got photos if you think it is the same....kefir has more than 20 beneficial cultures than regular yoghurt and can prevent e.coli....

i thought kefir was made with bread and allowed to ferment almost like a beer.

reminds me of when I was dating an asian woman and her mother kept a jar or fish heads in the cabinet for sauce....GROSS!

Yeah, Kefir is a dairy product that smells like regurgitate and looks like milk. It kind of grows on you, though. It supposedly does wonders for your digestive system (like active cultures yogurt).

If you check Wikipedia you will see a photo of the Kefir bacteria growth. There are many beneficial aspects of Kefir, so check out this photo first to see if it resembles what you saw. As for keeping it under the sink, I'd pass on that. We buy Kefir at the Russian stores all the time and it is in the refrigerated section. You also might find it at your local supermarket in the brand Lifeway.

Now if only the grocery stores would start carrying Kvas, I'd be happy.

Here's a link to the photo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kefir

Sounds like "Молочный гриб" ("milk mushroom") - it's extremely good for you! Yes, it's possible to make kefir out of that.

There is also "чайный гриб" ("tea mushroom") - this thing is very good for your health too. My mom used to have a jar of "tea mushroom", I tried it.

Does it look like one of these jars:

It's a big jar with a towel over the top of it. I don't know if it's "growing" inside that jar or what. I mean it's not refrigerated...and she drinks out of it. She showed me the jar last night and asked if I wanted some...and I was like; "I think I'l pass on this one."

Like many of the old world concoctions there are all manner of claimed cures for Kefir but it does work well on the digestive system. It is especially good if you have had a recent sickness in which you took a bunch of medication to kill what was ailing you. It restores the good bacteria you need and works really good at cleaning out the digestive track.

Don't go a long way from the house after you have consumed a glassful of Kefir. By the way it does come in flavors.
