And another one... What is the bare minimum to submit with the i-864? I am living abroad, thus ineligible to sponsor my husband. And I sort of forgot to file last years return--oopps. But I've done that now. Anyways, I will have my aunt sponsor him who earns several times the minimum threshold. Is her tax file return transcripts from the past 3 years sufficient? Or does she need a letter from her employer stating her pay/employment? Just trying to make this as easy as possible for all involved :)

The mandatory items for the AOS package are:

-cover sheet from payment portal

-I-864 form

-tax information

With a co-sponsor, also needed:

-their I-864 form

-their tax information

-proof of US residency/citizenship

Employment letters and pay stubs are optional, but almost always recommended.

Thank you for that. This is such a complicated process with so many players--I wish I could revamp the entire process for USCIS. Wouldn't it be nice if EVERYTHING could be done in one step? When I applied for my fiancee visa to Australia, I sent everything (all 7 lbs of paperwork) at the same time--this included police reports, relationship evidence, AOS evidence, visa application, everything. I didn't hear anything from anyone for months but it was much easier doing that and just waiting 6 months to hear 'granted' at the end of it!

Yeah, it would definitely be easier in some ways if everything was submitted at once. And it would be easier if all the forms could be completed online. With validation, the system could make sure every required line was filled out and that some answers were valid answers, thus reducing a lot of RFEs.

@Laure&Colin - Dunno about the first two but the answer to your third question is you get your alien number when you get your green card.

OK, thanks!

Anyone else for the other question?

In DS230, the part where they ask about previous trips to the US, do I include a trip made when I was 14 years old, and I'm unsure about the exact dates? And what do I write in "visa type" when travelling without a visa under VWP?

Like Milopnkr I got approved by USCIS in 2 weeks, so I didn't have quite as much time as I thought to find out about the next steps!

Since you don't know the exact dates, I'd suggest writing in the question to *see additional sheet*. Then, write up an additional sheet with the question and then answer saying you were 14 (give the year) and if you have a rough estimate of what month, include that. Mention you came over under the VWP. Make sure you include in a header the following information of both the petitioner and beneficiary: full name and date of birth. And write the case number as well.

Once you go through POE, the stamp you receive in your passport will act as a temporary green card up to a year until you get the plastic card in the mail (usually a few weeks after POE). If you want, you can do POE, turn around and take a flight anywhere in the world. There's no minimum waiting time before you fly again. Although, you might be questioned at the border why you're leaving the US so soon and they might get suspicious.

And you can travel wherever you want (as long as you have an appropriate visa, if needed). But be warned, there are questions on the N-400 (naturalization form) and if you've spent too much time outside the US, your application will be denied.

I looked on the I-751 (form to remove conditions on two year green card), and there don't seem to be any questions about time spent outside the US, but if you get an interview and they ask you about it and if you've spent too much time outside the US, they might deny you I believe.

You only need to post your question once :P

Hey Friends

Today I called up DOS to ask whether the consulate in Montreal has received my Cr1 application package, the operator told me that my case is under AP.

When I told her that my case is already been completed and the package has been sent to the consulate on 2nd of Dec, she told me that it is the electronic copy of my application and they will complete the review when they receive the paper copy and she was not ready to listen anything further from me and said bye. I really could not understand what she was talking about.

Then I called NVC, and they told me that my case has already been sent to Montreal consulate and gave me the Montreal consulate no 514 398 9695 to call up and find out whether it has been received by them. But After calling I came to know that Montreal Consulate longer provides operator assistance, so I sent an email to them. I hope I will get a reply soon so that I can sign up for the DHL.

Yeah, the consulate in Montreal doesn't provide service by phone. For the email, you might not hear a response for a few days as they're backlogged.

I'd suggest calling DOS again and asking. The operator you got must have been on crack or something. Just call a few times until it's been confirmed a few times that your package has been received. Good luck.
