Gary,

I will however concede that I do wish that the rest of the U.S. could be more like Burlington in that sense. That they would shun the #######, and the cream would rise to the top. Unfortunately, I don't see it happening, not unless there is some massive e coli breakout from every single fast food restaurant.

Gary, I'm not sure I have made this clear over the years. Burlington has a population of 42,000 people, mostly homogenous, not exactly what you could use as an example from which other cities could copy and adapt. You don't seem to grasp that the difference in metro dynamics of a large city versus Burlington is massive, thus rendering your comparison useless.

I guess I don't. Can you explain what the differences in metro dynamics are? This is interesting. Why are the people of Burlington able to make that choice and others are not? What prevents them from making that choice? And is it addresses by an ordiance aimed at Happy Meals@ If so does this particular dynamic "need" to be told how to eat? Why? This is very interesting and clearly something I am not familiar with, I would like to know more.

You are right about the population, we also have an additional 12,000 college students who are not included in the recent census, making us a city of 52,000 with a large percentage of the people here being from somewhere else. maybe that helps your explanation? I don;t know. Very interesting, please continue.

Thanks. Why though? Are we smarter than people in California? Why do you suppose we have so few fast food restraunts here? very few national chain stores even. We do not think "Olive Garden" is Italian food and we do not have a "Red Lobster". Why?

Maybe it is the dynamics you talked about, can we discuss that more?

You just don't get it. The federal government didn't have anything to do with the criminalization and decriminalization of marijuana in Alaska. Conservatives were the ones who led the charge to re-criminalize it, and a few advocates for the decriminalization solicited the help of the ACLU, who succesfully tried the case and had the unconstitutional ballot measure overturned. You can say "I live here, I know" all you want, but the facts are the facts.

The Feds didn't have anything to do with it? HA HA god your clueless. Drinking age in Alaska was 19. The Feds told all the states that had drinking ages lower than 21 that they either moved up the drinking age to 21 or faced the consequences of losing Fed funding on highways, capital projects, etc.. and ####### happened bright guy? All the states changed their min drinking age to 21 years old. Same thing happened with weed up here. You either go by what the Feds say, or lose millions of dollars and thousands of jobs. Now go play with something you understand...maybe Lego's or something.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Gary, it would take too much time and effort, and it's simply not worth it. The short version of it is that in smaller towns (can't call a town of 42k a city really)chain stores tend to fail at a higher rate. Why do people go to McDonalds? It's cheap and easy, especially when dealing with a metro commute. In smaller towns, you don't have the insane rush, you have families that have a lot more time. I imagine if you asked people who regularly eat at fast food, would they eat at a better, high quality restaurant, or at home if the difference in price was nominal, and the had the time to prepare it, an overwhealming majority would do it.

Wow, Kip, thats an uber fail of a post. 10/10 Fail.

You have a red herring, and a logical fallacy in just about every sentence. Come on corky, lets get back to the topic at hand. With regards to the criminalization and subsequent decriminalization of cannabis in Alaska, the federal government played no role. It was all state and local level politics.

The drinking age here was 18 (different dynamics) The college students used to walk to downtown, get drunk and walk, stagger, stumble back to their dorms/fraternaties. The federal government demanded we raise the age to 21 or they would not give back the tax dollars which they took away. NOW the students drive to Montreal (drinking age 18) get drunk and DRIVE back on dark rural roads.

Brilliant!

3 years ago a drunk student coming back from Montreal was driving south in the northbound lane of Interstate 87 in NY. He nearly collided with a Greyhound bus headed toward Montreal. Both the car and the bus went off the road in an area of Interstate 87 where there is no cell service due to the Federal government not allowing cell towers to be placed in the Adirondack National Park. I guess it was OK to run an interstate highway through the park but not cell towers! No way!

9 people died before someone going south saw the accident and drove out of the National park and called emergency services.

one post removed for poking fun of a member´s past brushes with the law.

FFS Charles, I was told that if someone else brought it up, I could comment on it. The topic was generally broached, so it seemed within those parameters. I guess I should start actually trolling, then maybe I can be a moderator like you.

Uh oh. If that's not allowed we're going to have to stick to ICP references and "you can't comprehend stuff" posts.

Way to spoil all the fun, charles!

no answer.

There are successful chain sotres here, 2 Lowe's, 1 Home Depot, 1 Walgreen's, several Rite Aid's, etc. etc. Burlington is very small, in terms of area. There are more than 225,000 people in thenearby towns of Chittenden county, which is in no way sparsely populated nor is it lacking any traffic. we have only 1 "pass through" Interstate. All the other roads are two lane, a few 4 lane. Traffic in Burlington and the surrounding towns is gridlock in the afternoon.

what are the dynamics you speak of? I would appreciate your taking the time to give an answer as I am interested.

All that took place ..the changing of the drinking age back in '83 or '84 (can't remember but I know it was one of those years) for most states. Reagan was on a mission with his zero tolerance law and moving up the drinking age. I got lucky, I was grandfathered in when they changed that law so it didn't effect me. I was legal to drink when I was 19, and when they changed it they grandfathered everyone who was born before Jan 1st 1966 or 65..it was one of those years.

Gary, I can suggest some books for you, but seriously, i'm not going to type out a dissertation, or even copy and paste what you could research yourself if you actually were interested. I think you are just making a sad attempt to troll. Here's a hint, don't follow Kip's lead, he's not good at it.

No answer. Not even a book suggestion

So we will just go with mine. The people of Vermont have no trouble with the responsibilities of freedom, making choices, carrying guns, eating healthy food. We have the 2nd lowest rate of obesity (Colorado is number 1) the lowest crime rate, the cleanest state AND the only state where the largest city has no McDonalds because ot closed due to lack of interest.

This is because we are generally better educated, more mature, wise, good looking, and better overall. We know the best way to avoid the government teaching our kids about sex is to teach them ourselves first. We know happy meals are bad for you and do not eat them very much. We know it is wrong to steal and hurt people so we don't.

that didn't take long at all.

When Californians migrate to other states they tend to have that lost look for the fact they don't know how to handle making all those choices for themselves. They never had to worry about that when they lived in California for the fact the government there did it all for them. In California's state of mind, you can never have enough laws as far as they are concerned.
