Kids in California public schools have to go to homosexual history classes, working people have to pay for illegals in state tuition, but parents in Frisco aren't allowed to buy their kids a Happy Meal w/toy?

So do kids in Alaska learn how to sit on their couch collecting entitlements instead of working? Do they learn all about the wonders of meth addiction? I mean, since you're trying to extrapolate a few instances into the norm, why not just make sh!t up like you are?

The boys up here end up liking girls after they hit puberty and vise versa. Alaska is far different from California. Weather, sexual preference, weed is legal, guns are legal...just about everything up here is legal. It's called "freedom of choice". That and we don't cater to illegals up here.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Funny that you bring up decriminalized marijuana. Do you even know why it is legal or who made it possible?

I dont' think that it is legal so much as there are so few people and nobody gives a #######. You should check out the laws of Alaska sometime.

I haven't smoked the stuff myself for years now, but I do know that I'm allowed three plants per adult in my place and up to a 1/4 oz. on my person when I leave this house. So ya, I'm guessing it's legal.

It's not illegal, it is decriminalized, on a state level. I read about the campaign to criminalize and subsequently decriminalize it. You can thank the governor during the late 80's and early 90's for leading the campaign to criminalize it. It was previously legal. But you can thank the ACLU for decriminalizing it.

It didn't work that way. This is exactly how it went down. Back when Bush Sr was elected president he told Alaska that if we didn't make weed illegal that Alaska would get zero dollars in Federal highway funds. That money amounts to tens of millions of dollars, most of the time hundreds of millions in any given year. It didn't even go to a vote for the people. We woke up one morning and it was illegal even though it can't be illegal according to our state constitution. It's called "extortion by the Feds". When Clinton got into office he said Alaska could do what it wants in regards to making weed legal again and so it's legal again.

You seem to like to blame the federal government, but that's just not how things went down. Marijuana was legalized with the Ravin decision in 1975, however was not actually put into effect until 1982. However, in 1990, at the behest of Gov. Hickel, and other conservatives, a ballot measure was placed in the 1990 election, whereupon the voters decided that they wanted it criminalized again. The ballot measure and subsequent law read :

Under Alaska law it is currently legal for adults over 18 years old to possess under four ounces of marijuana in a home or other private place. The penalty for adults over 18 years old for possessing less than one ounce in public is a fine of up to $100. This initiative would change Alaska's laws by making all such possession of marijuana criminal, with possible penalties of up to 90 days in jail and/or up to a $1000 fine

In 2003, the ACLU was asked to take a look at a case, and they did, which became Noy vs. State (2003), which struck down the law as it was unconstitutional as per the 1975 Ravin decision which actually amended the Alaska state constitution. You should read Criminal Law by John M. Scheb, you might actually learn something about the stat you claim is your home....

I know exactly how it went down for the fact I was living here at the time. Hickel being the typical Alaska republican that he was didn't want to touch that law. He was all for people making their own decisions. Alaska either made it illegal, or we would lose our Federal highway funding...which means thousands of jobs for people here. As soon as Clinton took over it was legal again for the fact he lifted the extortion measures in an act of good faith.

Now here's something to chew on. The only lib/commie hold out in Alaska is Anchorage where a sh*t load of yuppie pr*cks live. Anchorage is the only place here in Alaska where people can't smoke in the bars, and it's the only place in Alaska that has actually tried to recriminalize weed. So whenever some yuppie fck says their liberal they are full of sh*t for the fact those are the first bunch of a$$ wipes that try and set rules for everyone else...and they are not pro choice in anything other than maybe abortion. They can't make enough laws hence the reason most of the state votes the opposite of Anchorage in just about all matters.

You just don't get it. The federal government didn't have anything to do with the criminalization and decriminalization of marijuana in Alaska. Conservatives were the ones who led the charge to re-criminalize it, and a few advocates for the decriminalization solicited the help of the ACLU, who succesfully tried the case and had the unconstitutional ballot measure overturned. You can say "I live here, I know" all you want, but the facts are the facts.

Well, it is a local government who does not have the jurisdiction to actually affect real change, so they do what they can, for their people in their community. Sorry Paul, no matter how you frame it, making our food supply healthier is not a bad thing. You still have the choice to go home and add as much salt and bacon as you want. You are free to have as many heart attacks as your body can handle, but that doesn't mean everyone else wants that fate.

If you had your way, this law would be overturned. Who has the authority to overturn a local governments decisions? So I guess, in this scenario, you are a fan big brother coming in and setting aside this local law.

Why do we need ANY government to "make our food supply healthier" DON'T BUY HAPPY MEALS!

As far as Vermont having a healthy food supply we are the only state in which both the largest city and the capital city have NO McDonalds whatsoever. Burlington had one, but it closed...lack of business. In the center of a town where 20% of the population are college students the McDonald's could not keep its doors open.

THAT is how you make your food supply healthy. And we did it YEARS before San Francisco residents who sat around waiting for the government to do something.

That is disingenuous at best...

Really? Worked in Burlington Vermont. The McDonalds closed because we CHOSE not to go there.

What exactly is the huge difficulty that people in California seem to have with freedom?

Gary, I'm not sure I have made this clear over the years. Burlington has a population of 42,000 people, mostly homogenous, not exactly what you could use as an example from which other cities could copy and adapt. You don't seem to grasp that the difference in metro dynamics of a large city versus Burlington is massive, thus rendering your comparison useless.
