We all get that. It's oil money. This year it was something like $1,200 per person.

I didn't get any

He's referring to me collecting unemployment. I don't know how it works where you live, but here in Alaska you have to work to receive unemployment benefits. It's not uncommon for people like me (construction workers) who work seasonal jobs to collect unemployment. When we work, we work 7 days a week, a min. of 84.5 hours a week (12 hours a day) but a lot of times I will put in well over 100 - 120 hours per week working outside doing construction and/or pipe line maintenance in sometimes -50 or even colder temps. So I don't feel bad about drawing unemployment seeing how it's all part of the life in this line of work. In fact it's common in all states for people that work construction and/or seasonal employment.

I know, you spend 6 months of the year lying on the couch. I was going there next, but I guess I can't now since you already brought it up yourself.

You would if you were living in Alaska and you have maintained residence here for a min. of one calender year and you didn't owe any child support, student loans, and court fee's. You have to pay Fed tax on that money...it's figured into your total income for the IRS, but again it's money from tax royalties that the state collects from the oil companies for using the Alaska Pipeline.

Our money...not the Feds. :)

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I see. I'm trying to follow here. Is it that you don't have a problem with freeloading in general, but only if it is federal money?

I'm not understanding that post of yours...? If your referring to the oil tax royalties that all Alaskans receive once a year...that's our money. The pipeline is owned by the state and maintained for a fee by the oil companies dba "Alyeska Pipeline Co.". It's our money and we share it with all residents ..men,women, and children. Why wouldn't we share that money? It's ours to share in. That fund is worth billions and I mean literally billions of dollars and it's invested in stocks, radio and TV stations...you name it, and chances are we have pipeline money invested in it. Oil is what keeps this state rolling and we are by far the richest state in the union. Our state surplus ($$$$) is second to none in regards to other states in the US.

The oil companies own the pipeline. More than half of the pipeline is on federal land. Alaska basically passed legislation that allows them to steal from the rest of America. It's outrageous that I don't get my share.

Federal land...lol. Ya, Carter was a master thief in that regard. The Feds in Carters time decided that Alaska should be Federal and not state owned land. It was nothing short of robbery.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska

According to an October 1998 report by the United States Bureau of Land Management, approximately 65% of Alaska is owned and managed by the U.S. federal government as public lands, including a multitude of national forests, national parks, and national wildlife refuges. Of these, the Bureau of Land Management manages 87 million acres (35 million hectares), or 23.8% of the state. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. It is the world's largest wildlife refuge, comprising 16 million acres (6.5 million hectares).

Of the remaining land area, the state of Alaska owns 101 million acres (41 million hectares); its entitlement under the Alaska Statehood Act. A portion of that acreage is occasionally ceded to organized boroughs, under the statutory provisions pertaining to newly-formed boroughs. Smaller portions are set aside for rural subdivisions and other homesteading-related opportunities, though these are infrequently popular due to the often remote and roadless locations. The University of Alaska, as a land grant university, also owns substantial acreage which it manages independently.

Another 44 million acres (18 million hectares) are owned by 12 regional, and scores of local, Native corporations created under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. Regional Native corporation Doyon, Limited often promotes itself as the largest private landowner in Alaska in advertisements and other communications. Provisions of ANCSA allowing the corporations' land holdings to be sold on the open market starting in 1991 were repealed before they could take effect. Effectively, the corporations hold title (including subsurface title in many cases, a privilege denied to individual Alaskans) but cannot sell the land. Individual Native allotments can be and are sold on the open market, however.

Various private interests own the remaining land, totaling about one percent of the state. Alaska is, by a large margin, the state with the smallest percentage of private land ownership when Native corporation holdings are excluded.

The government stole land from the native Americans too you know. So caucasian Alaskans and native Americans have 2 things in common - they both had their land stolen land, and they both get "free" money. Who knew.

I'l give you credit for trying, but that's about it. :) The Russians took the land from the Natives...like the natives even noticed, and we the US (Feds) purchased the land from Russia, just like they purchased land from Spain, France, etc...

Now here's the part you don't get. The tax money off of oil royalties that goes to the state of Alaska is paid from...oil royalties. The BILLIONS of DOLLARS that's given to the natives up here come from BIA.. That's "Bureau of Indian Affairs". It's a Fed agency that hands native Americans money taken from US tax payers. Do you see the difference or should I post this in bold?

Oil companies are charged (taxed) by the state of Alaska...oil companies pay that money (taxes) to the state which is US who live in Alaska. The BIA is funded solely by the US tax payer.

The land claims settlement act was passed in 1971. The Russians were long gone by then.

So Alaska is charging oil companies taxes to transport American oil on federal land through a pipeline that the oil companies already own.

Sounds legit. Just don't be surprised if they start taxing the air that you're breathing.

The Feds and the state cut deal with the natives up here aka Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. That doesn't account for the Federally owned land up here. They took most of it during Carters time.

BP, Conoco-Phillips, Exxon, ENI (Italian company), Pioneer, etc.. pay taxes to the state...np, those companies aren't hurting and they are making billions of dollars every year with the oil they pump from Alaska. Pay to play. Only states with the IQ of a turnip give their resources away with nothing in return.

Now if you don't mind your tax dollars paying for people of color that's your thing. Me on the other hand...I'm all for everyone being treated equal and playing on a level field. If your going to give freebies to people of color on my dime, then give me the same freebies. Again you may want to give those people your money, but I don't.

If that's really true, send me my share of the permanent fund.

You could always write your local Congressman. On a good note, since Obama gave the go ahead for Arctic offshore drilling up here, and it's looking more and more like ANWR will soon be opened up for drilling...the oil tax money is going to be flowing into the state coffers. Bigger checks for everyone up here. Ah, I forgot about the natural gas line that's going to be run down from the Slope. Even more tax $$$ for us to blow. :hehe:

You did not get any because you do not live inAlaska and pay taxes there and the cost of living there.

Were you aginst the extensions to unemployment? Do you think unemployment should be ended?

Kip is a union construction worker and that is how it is for union construction workers in many states affected by winter, including Vermont. Our state just recently passed a law that union construction workers on seasonal layoff will need to do a job search, in the past they did not, but they can still collect unemployment. They just have to show they contacted 10 employers per week, which they can do by the internet, the joke of this is that no one is hiring in the winter. So now they have to sit up on the couch, turn on their computers and send 10 emails per week, then go back to sleep. We have a very liberal legislature and Governor.

You are anti-union, right? Care to say something bad about unions?

Our governor is Republican, and it was an Alaskan Republican governor, Sarah Palin, who decided to raise the tax on the oil companies which in turn gave us even more money. B-) She had us Alaskans in mind when she put it to big oil. :luv:

The last year she was in office is when we got our biggest dividend checks. Our checks were somewhere around $3,300 when she added an extra $1,200 to our dividend for what she called a "resource rebate". That was a nice fat check that year. It was the same year Bush gave everyone extra money for their income tax...2008 I think. I can't remember what I blew the money on, but it was gone too fast. :(
