I'm kinda double posting, but I find this personal experience interesting. See below:

Interesting turn of events. Nok got a "job."

It's more like a home factory job. We go pick all these pieces up from a warehouse here in Dallas from some Lao/Thai folks to make a necklace. She gets the pieces to put together 1000 necklaces, packaging etc. She sits here at home and it takes her about a day and a half. She gets 8 cents for every one. On her first go around she made $80 USD. The price tag on each sticker is $9.99.

I'm not sure what to think about it. She spends alot of hours doing it, but seems happy to be making her own money. In Thai terms, she is making a months worth of salary in 4 days.

The whole thing seems sorta legit. At the factory there are all kinds of Thai, Lao, and Khmer people there. They have to work there onsite, but Nok gets to take it home. They give her two days to get it done and we bring it back completed. Then they give her a new set of boxes.

She had to show her green card and SS card and fill out a W-4. I was glad to see that they're at least doing it legally.

I'd say it's a sweat shop, but she does it from home.

Not sure what you guys think about this? Any thoughts?

Sounds like really tedious and thankless work. I remember one time I sent away for some work making earrings, and they sent me all these little tiny beads. Seemed like about 50 that I had to put together just to make one earring. Took me forever, and I gave up before I completed one. She can get a job in a factory, making $10.00 per hour or so. Depends on what she wants to do, but it seems to me that she is being taken advantage of.

A day and a half is about 12 hours, yes? (Assuming you count one work day as 8 hours)

That comes out to about $6.67 per hour, which is about .50 below minimum wage.

If she can legally work, why not have her work outside the home where she'll earn more?

Her English isn't so good.

Her English isn't so good.

IMO, I don't think that matters for a lot of low paying jobs. I'd recommend looking into the big department stores who might still be looking for holiday help. In the meantime, there are some free online resources that could help her with her English. There are even free ESL classes offered in just about every city. Immersion via a job would be one of the best ways build her confidence in her English. :)

And payment below minimum wage is illegal...unless it is illegals doing the work and then you are all for it.

She is an employee, she completed a w-4 withholding form, she is not a contractor she is required to be paid the minimum wage for each hour worked. She is not a "tipped" employee. They should also be paying workman's comp insurance for her. If she is required to pick up her work and travel to do so she would be eligible for workman's comp if inured in a car accident on the way to or from picking up her work.

This is where we should discuss the abuse and exploitation if illegals by US employers...or move thread to OT since it is not P&R
