Horses could soon be slaughtered for meat in US

I think no matter how the animal is killed they help feed the world. I think animals have no rights if they had a voice then that be a different story.

Does that mean that you eat road kill? Animals have no voice but human beings do and have an inherent duty to protect animals from suffering, that's what makes us human.

A note: the horses to be slaughtered are NOT in their prime, but past it--the whole issue is much like butchering of aged no-longer-productive dairy cattle for meat (which IS done in the US and Canada--albeit rarely for human consumption, as it is too tough).

This doesn't excuse it.

The heated debate on wether to reopen equine slaughterhouses again has been going on for ages now. I am suprised you didn't know that- it's not fresh news. As far as slaughtering them in the US for human consumption goes- that's not likely to happen. Unless we get a huge beef/chicken and lamb or whatever shortage, the USDA is not going to fund the process of inspection and ranchers breeding horses for consumption are not likely to pay the extra to maintain them as far as reducing their natural parasite and disease load to comply with the standards of meat for human consumption.

As a horse owner I am against the re opening of slaughterhouses here in the US- but there is already a huge amount of horses being transported overseas and across the border for slaughter in worse than deplorable conditions.

Like I said....Not news really.

they not mean to 're-open' the slaugherhouses - instead - it'll just be 'another line of processing' at existing slaughterhouses.

No need to breed them specifically -there's loads of wild horses across the USA, easy to round up each year, bring in to a slaughterhouse. Many land owners will be paid by a middleman to allow the corraling and subsequent removal.

That makes it better in what way? Killing off wild horses so the land owners can be happy? What's wrong with this picture?

Many young horses such as Premarin foals and mares and 2 y/o TB are also killed. They aren't even fully mature, yet they get slaughtered.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Then what are farm animals good for? just to look at?

One can eat whatever they choose too, all I can say there are even ppl who has worked in this industry for their life have changed to vegetarian diet after they discovered how things were getting done in industry.

This is only an issue because eating horse here in the U.S. is taboo. This is no worse than the manner in which they slaughter pigs and cows. I don't approve of their barbaric methods, but some people need to stop this self righteous indignation over this.

I agree.

The slaughterhouse is a 'needed' evil. It's 'needed' in part because of irresponsible horse owners, irresponsible breeding practices and so on.....I don't like it, but I understand why it has to be done.

It's not the slaughterhouses fault that some so called horse lovers are partly to blame for the slaughterhouse existence.

As far as eating horse or any other animal. I don't care what anyone does in that regard.

IK HOU VAN JOU, MARK

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!
