GILBERT -- FBI agents have joined a Gilbert police investigation into a possible hate crime in which a Black Barbie doll was found hanging by its neck in the car of an African-American woman.

The 24-year-old woman found the doll July 8 after leaving the vehicle unlocked overnight at her apartment complex in the 1300 block of West Juniper Avenue, according to police.

The act potentially specifically targeted the victim, which could warrant federal charges should investigators determine it was motivated by the victim's race, said Special Agent Deborah McCarley, an FBI spokeswoman.

Federal agents learned of the investigation through news media and have been assisting police for several weeks to determine whether federal charges are warranted, McCarley said.

Recent finger print analysis has ruled out at least one investigative lead who lived in the area, according to Gilbert police.

Investigators are re-interviewing the victim's family and friends in hopes of uncovering new or previously undisclosed information, said Sgt. Andrew Duncan, a Gilbert police spokesman.

Would a voodoo doll with pins stuck in it warrant a full blown FBI investigation?

Your tax dollars at work.

And after they apprehended the 13 year olds responsible for this heinous crime...they were sent to their rooms without dinner and had TV priviledges revoked for a week.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

If the doll was in the car, doesn't it mean the owner of the car (the black woman) put it there?

If it turns out that it was an adult or teenager who did it, that can be contrived as a threat of physical harm...just like leaving a threatening note.

I grew up in that town (Gilbert, AZ) and back in the 70's, there was maybe one black family there. It used to be the cotton capital of the world at one time - small farming community that developers have turn into suburbs. It's still predominately White and they have had problems with skinheads in the last few years at the high schools. I wouldn't easily dismiss this as just a prank.
