Hello Everyone,

I'm about to file a K-1 Visa on behalf of my fiancee. She lives in India & I live in the USA. We've known each other for almost 3 1/2 years now & had our engagement ceremony in India last Dec.

I moved to the us in 1993 when I was 4 or 5 years old. I'm a legal resident & become legal through my parents. I have my passport, but cant find my certificate of citizenship. Not sure if it was ever made or requested. I don't know. My parents don't remember it ever being made or ever requesting it. They remember my passport being made.

I was looking through all the forms needed for a K-1 Visa. In "I-239F" form they ask for proof of citizenship in #10. & ask for cert. of citizenship #.I cant find the cert. of citizenship & don't know the number. Should I check the "Parents" box & select "No" to "Having obtained a certificate of citizenship in your name?" Not sure what to do, in case we might have requested in the past & lost it.

I looked online & found out it takes about a year to get replacement of cert. of citizenship. I can't wait another year. Our families want to do the wedding next fall.I don't want to do anything wrong or fill the form incorrectly. I was reading through the forums & saw that you can send pics of your passport pages in place of your certificate of citizenship in the 1st package.

If anyone can give me any advice or insight, that would be great. Thank you very much.

If you have a certificate of citizenship(even if you lost it) you cannot say you don't have one and lie. That will cause problems.

I don't know. This maynot be correct.

I would go to your State Office where you reside or where upon entry was made. Those records are there. There maybe a fee but those records are there. Everything. Thats where I would start.

do you mean to say that you are in the US legally or that you were a permanent resident and have since become a citizen? just making sure. anyway, yes, select NO and submit all the pages (in color) of your passport, and make sure it's valid for at least 5 years. =)

Less than 10% of all Americans have a Certificate of Citizenship, so it's not necessary to prove that you are a U.S. citizen. You can use your U.S. passport for that.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

@Inky: I don't want to lie either. I hate leing. I know it will cause problems if I do, so I wont do it.

@Tim/Mav: Thx, I will call them & find out. Not sure if they will be open today. Hopefully they never issued me a Cert. of Citizenship. & I can put that on the form. My parents said they dont remember ever requesting my cert. because they didn't need it. My passport was made with the help of my parents & my parents said they never asked for cert. of citizenship. cuz my parents were already citizens.

@Zen Den: I'm a legal & permanent resident. I have my passport, my social security number, driver's licence etc. My parents took the citizenship test & got their citizenship & their cert. Because I was under 18 at that time, I automatically become a citizen through my parents & wasnt required to take the test. My passport expires in 2017, got it renewed in 2007.

Thank you everyone for quick reply :). I will let you guys know after I call & find out. Have a great day, thanks again.

If im not mistaken, doesnt one of the forms, I think the Affidavit of support, ask a series of questions like;

Are you a US Citizen - copy of BC

Are you a PR - Provide Certificate number and copy

ect ect . . .

Im sure I saw on one of the forms during this process that a certificate number needed to be provided. Now just because you cant find yours, doesnt mean you cant get it. Just call or look on a website to find whom you need to talk to to get a copy of the certificate.
