It is NOT "perfectly normal" to get a different A number when AOSing from a K1.

You are correct, this is not normal. I mentioned as much with regard to the K-1 AOS in my previous post. However, in prior posts it has been stated without qualification that A-numbers are always assigned for life. This is absolutely not the case in all circumstances.

We are assigned ONE A number for life (and are told such) and that is on the K1 NOA2. It is EXTREMELY odd that this happened and was not rectified with the original (and correct) A number being used. In every other case I've read they restored it to the correct A number.

Your A-number is not assigned for life. There are a number of circumstances that can cause somebody who entered on a K-1 visa to be assigned a new A-number. This is normal USCIS practice. As I said above, this should not happen when doing a normal K-1 AOS, but it CAN happen in certain circumstances (out of status and unlawfully present K-1 visa holders who adjust using a new I-130, for instance). It is incorrect to state that A-numbers obtained through the K-1 process are assigned for 'life'. It is correct to state that the A-number assigned on a K-1 NOA should not change during the course of a normal K-1 AOS, and it is good practice to follow up with USCIS should this occur.

I realize that the above does not necessarily apply to the OP, since he/she IS in the process of a normal K-1 AOS and somehow ended up a with a different A-number anyway. However, it does apply to at least one other person in this thread, and anybody else who may be reading this thread with circumstances that go beyond a normal K-1 AOS. It is, at the very least, worth acknowledging.
