You think so? I was transferred to Tier 2 regarding this matter and the guy said that it's fine. You think I should just go ahead and have an Infopass? I'm adjusting from K1.

Your AOS will be fine, but the wrong A number can cause issues later, it means your file is split into two. I would personally make an INFOPASS and get it fixed. Your A number is your number for LIFE. They shouldn't just change it to another number. If it were supposed to change everyone's would. Mine has never changed. Most people's have never changed. Sometimes they do and that's when you get it fixed.

I already set up an appointment, but it's still on December 12, as that's the earliest available date. Yeah, I guess it's better to get fixed so as to avoid future problems. Thank you, Vanessa&Tony!

Update on this. On 12-06-2011 we info pass for Pui because her brother unexpectedly passed away. We went there and I also asked about her two A#'s. They said they cannot do anything about it right now because we had filed the AOS papers and to ask about it at our interview for AOS. Today I received an email with the following information:

The status of this service request is:

Recently you notified USCIS of a typographical error with your A-number. Please be advised your new A-number will be AXXXXXXXXX, this is now a permanent A-number for you.

If you have any further questions, please call the National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283.

Please remember: By law, every person who is not a U.S. citizen and who is over the age of 14 must submit Form AR-11 AND notify this office of their change of address, within 10 days from when they move (persons in "A" or "G" nonimmigrant status are exempt from this requirement). To notify this office of a move, visit our website at: www.uscis.gov or call the National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283. The Form AR-11 can be downloaded from our website or you can call the National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283 and we can order one for you. Instructions for filing the Form AR-11, including mailing instructions, are included on the Form.

So I guess when she returns later this month she needs to use the new A# at POE.

Sorry. They said to use the new A# that came with the AOS NOA1's.

I get the feeling they stuffed up the K1 one and gave it to someone else which is why they changed it... Either way hopefully this means they moved the stuff from her old A file into the new one.

Yeah that's what they told my husband to use from now on too. But I guess they went extra miles to send you a confirmation on your case status...

I have a feeling they will say they are not in charge of the case and that the St Louis office is in charge of the case and to ask about it at your interview. That is what they told us. I would still go so they know you and them as well are aware of the two different A#'s.

I know what you mean. You have been waiting longer then we have. The day we had the info pass I received the text that we got an RFE for Pui's AOS. Hopefully we will all get answers soon. Good luck with your info pass next week.

It is perfectly normal for you to be assigned a different A# when you file for AOS. It happens all the time. Happened to me as well - my AOS filing ended up with a different A# than my prior H-1B and OPT/EAD documents. I first spoke to my firm's immigration legal team, and they said that this can occur, and does so frequently, and to not worry about it. Not satisfied, I had a conversation with a former USCIS adjudicator (friend of a friend) who said that in certain cases, USCIS will often split up a person's file into a different A#. They do this intentionally, and it is not something to worry about. It is absolutely not true that A-numbers are assigned for life in all circumstances.

That being said, there HAVE been legitimate cases of typos and A# mix-ups, and if you suspect your case is one of those (such as your I-765 and I-131 receipts having a different A# than your I-485 and I-130 receipt), by all means, do follow up. It is admittedly odd that an AOS would cause a new A# to be created when AOSing from a K-1 (as opposed to my case, where I did it from H-1B). Always better to be on the safe side. :)

It is NOT "perfectly normal" to get a different A number when AOSing from a K1. We are assigned ONE A number for life (and are told such) and that is on the K1 NOA2. It is EXTREMELY odd that this happened and was not rectified with the original (and correct) A number being used. In every other case I've read they restored it to the correct A number.

Your case is entirely different (as explained above by someone else).
