In my state the enactment of a law that harshly punishes employers for employing illegals while also giving them a means to verify employee citizenship/status has been highly effective.

Some such as onion farmers would say too effective as they no longer have a cheap source of labor and they are not seeing the native population coming in to take those jobs.

This has no effect on wage but is a great control. However I do not think states should be dabbling in immigration policy, this needs to be rolled up to the federal level and applied across the board.

Onion farmers need to pay more for labor and comply with labor laws, and YES charge more for onions. US citizens WILL do those jobs when they pay enough money and give enough benefits. If it is good enough for janitors, waitresses, trash collectors it ought to apply to onion pickers.

This is in no way "dabbling" in immigration law. Each state has its own wage and hour laws and workman's comp laws and an obligation to enforce those laws. Hiring people in violation of those STAE wage, hour, workmans comp and other labor laws IS the business of the states. It has nothing whatever to do with "immigration".

And YES we have Federal wage and hour laws also and the Federal government should enforce this also. It should be comprehensive and no one should be able to exploit and mistreat humans because they are brown. The same worker protection laws that apply to white people should be applied to everyone.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I don't disagree with using e-verify but it's obvious that ICE is doing little to nothing in regards to busting these farmers and/or their illegal employees.

They would not have to do much, that is the beauty of it. It is virtually self enforcing. You catch one or two businesses employing illegals. Padlock the business. Sell off their assets to pay the tax and SHUT THEM DOWN...job done. How many businesses do you think would have to be hammered before NO ONE would hire an illegal? One? Two? No one will hire them, period. No jobs? Illegals go "bye bye" all by themselves, just the same way they got here, they will PAY people to take them out!

Kip, this is very simple, very very simple. The BENEFIT of hiring illegals currently is far better than the risk of hiring them, so many people do it. If the RISk is more than the benefit, no one will hire them. You do not need to "enforce" very much, you just have to create a situation that is not economically feasible for a business.

Illegals are here and are employed for economical reasons, if you make it economically unfeasible to hire them they are GONE! Just as sure as horsedrawn carriages!

Yeah imagine the whole ID 21 year old scenario. Stores and restaurants are so fearful of getting in trouble they ID 30 year olds. Imagine what half of that zeal would do regarding illegals.

Who is gonna hunch their back over in 100 degree weather and pick berries for 10 hours a day? It'd still be tough to fill positions at $15 an hour, not that the farmers can afford to pay that much...

Exactly.

American history does not indicate that citizens do the dirty work in this country. First we imported a class of people from Africa to do everything we couldn't be bothered to do. About the time there was a war over this entire dirty business, there was also a potato famine in Ireland. Along came the Irish to wash our floors and clothes and work in the sweatshops. We had some Chinese to build our railroads too. Not long after that come the Italians and the Germans, fleeing political unrest in their countries, and guess who is cookin', cleanin' and sweatin' then?

America always has to have an underclass they can give their dirty jobs to - and an underclass they can trample on, talk about, and hate.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

I think the figure is about 3% of illegals working in Agriculture.

So no issues with the rest?
