In my state the enactment of a law that harshly punishes employers for employing illegals while also giving them a means to verify employee citizenship/status has been highly effective.

Some such as onion farmers would say too effective as they no longer have a cheap source of labor and they are not seeing the native population coming in to take those jobs.

This has no effect on wage but is a great control. However I do not think states should be dabbling in immigration policy, this needs to be rolled up to the federal level and applied across the board.

want to solve a lot of the illegal immigration problem?

Eliminate the minimum wage.

Fantastic idea!

Reminds me at the homeless guy in his 40s the wife and I saw at Lowe's not too long ago, holding a sign "Day Laborer $5 per Hour."

I offered his lazy azz $4 per hour but he looked at me funny, this loser. Got an illegal alien instead who worked for $3.50 but that moron fell off the ladder and broke his foot. Had to drag him to a ditch, hit him with a shovel over the head and get a replacement. Goddam lazy roaches. Without a minimum wage, even I can employ a little army of slaves for $2.50 an hour who do all the nasty work for me. Heck, If I find a cute young girl, I even may have her wipe my buttocks once I'm done in the bathroom. Without minimum wage, plenty of jobs will open up!

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

How does getting rid of the minimum wage help the problem with illegals?

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

i guess it would lower the amount one could pay legally, thus pricing the illegals out of business.

I don't know. I mean if farmers can show where it would help get rid of the illegals, then maybe a loophole for farmers in regards to min. wage.

Get rid of the illegals, except the ones that actually benefit you? Too funny Kip.

The theory is, that if you eliminate the minimum wage, then wages would fall to an equilibrium point at which it would no longer be advantageous for people to come here to work. I would prefer to mandate e-verify and institute massive punitive penalties for those who do not comply, or maintain their certification. If you can't work here, then you will see a massive decline in illegal immigration.

I don't disagree with using e-verify but it's obvious that ICE is doing little to nothing in regards to busting these farmers and/or their illegal employees.

It's obvious to someone who has never actually seen them enforce the law. I see it all the time Kip, it happens. However, most of their personnel are concentrated more on urban areas as that is better spent money. They are under funded, and over burdened currently.

That's why I'm all for a wall along the southern border with a mine field. It would pay for itself in less than a decade or two. A few of them see others blown up trying to cross into the US illegally and they will spread the world fast about what happens when you try to sneak into the US illegally when making a run for the border. It worked for the Commies and it would work for us.

That is not only fiscally dumb, but depraved and potentially in violation of international laws. You keep going on about how we need a wall on our border. That is stupid and short sighted. Most illegals in this country didn't run across a border, they came here as tourists and stayed. None of your border enforcement ideas would combat against that. You could pull all troops home from Iraq/Afghanistan and put them on our southern border and you would see a marginal decrease in illegal immigration. If you aren't willing to address the root of the problem, then you have no business discussing illegal immigration. If the jobs available here are impossible to access, or the pay is no longer worth the risk of illegally coming here, then you will see illegal immigration decrease substantially.

You should read more about the topic you are trying to discuss Kip. You wouldn't look so ignorant all the time if you did. The Pew Institute is a good place to find information about this topic.
