Does anyone know if the Thai Birth Certificate Translation needs to be approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs? According to the Consulate website it just needs to be a translation. I think the translators are just trying to squeeze a few more baht out of me.

I already was dinged a good amount for having to rush to get the marriage certificate from the states translated and stamped so we could register our marriage here and pick up our baby's birth certificate.

The format I copied below is directly from USCIS & has been used many times. The " certification " is simply the form you see. There is no need to pay a translation service to do the work unless you cant find anyone that can qualify to do it & sign the form.

No need to pay another fee because they say a Thai agency needs to deal with it. This is classic Thai extortion tactics.

A legit translation service would charge 500 to 1,000 baht for this work. No more than 3 days.

Why would you need to translate a marrige cert from the USA?

MFA has nothing to do with it. However when I got married over there I had to go register it with MFA on Chaeng Watthana. Not sure why.

That is what I thought for the birth certificate. The place we went for our marriage certificate only wanted 300 baht to translate the birth certificate and never mentioned MFA. I went to a couple of the more convenient translation services around the condo and they wanted to take it to MFA.

I will hop in the car and drive down to the other one today.

We didn't need to translate the marriage certificate. I had to get the affidavit that we were married from the embassy translated, and legalized by MFA in order to register our marriage with the Amphur. The Amphur does not accept the US marriage certificate (even when translated). You have to go to the embassy pay 50.00 bucks for them to notarize the affidavit, then have that translated, then take it to MFA, then take that to the Amphur to register your marriage. It is the same process as if you were going to get married here in Thailand.

We had to do it cause they wouldn't release our babies birth certificate without the marriage being registered with the Amphur.
